Our understanding of the world is based on the various beliefs we embrace. Many philosophies tend to be culturally specific and shape individuals in a certain way. However, we are all the same deep beneath our skin. Equality is a philosophical view that should be followed so that everyone can have fairness in life. Culture affects equality and dehumanizes individuals by shaping society’s values and moral beliefs. A philosophical view of mine is that the belief of beauty standards is an issue that needs to be resolved (in order for people to have equality). Men understand that they have the need for a higher demand of beauty, as they see it in women. They want to have a body image that will impress other women and that other men may envy. With influences from the media (shirtless advertisements of muscular men), more guys are learning how their gender roles may affect their body image. When being more concerned for grooming and appearance, males tend to drift away from the social norm. Metrosexual is a term that these men use to describe their sexuality. Being metrosexual is not the norm; heterosexuality and homosexuality are the two sexualities, according to the norm. With the rise of metrosexual men there have been an increase in males with high-minded hygiene. A few ways that males are stabilizing their appearance is by combing their hair, trimming/maintaining their beard, and exercising. Men of upper class follow up with the body images from the media, by getting expensive manicures, pedicures, and surgical implants. There is a sense of inequality that is towards metrosexuals. They face the stereotype of being gay. However, when women follow the standards for an ideal body image, they don’t get stereotyped as being lesbian. There is a dichotomy for women since girls who don’t follow the ideal norms for beauty are stereotyped as lesbian.
