Area 51 was a top secret military base, located in southern Nevada at 37 degrees 14’06”N, 115 degrees 48’40”w. Upon reaching the complex you cannot miss the 10' high wall, painted into a giant mural surrounding the entire grounds. The mural portrays everything in our generation from the Coco Cola Polar Bear to Austin Powers. And from generations past things as The Who's Tommy and performers at the original Woodstock in 1969 like Crosby, Stills Nash and Young. As you walked though the main gates of complex the first thing you saw was a line of Porto potties over a mile long. Then as you walked past there you would come too the main camping area. This area was a wide open area full of freshly cut green grass with trees growing sporadically around in the area many times that of a regulation football field. Which would soon be nothing more then a giant sea of every color, shape and size of tent that you can imagine. And surrounding each tent was either some type of flag or descriptive emblem to allow you to find your tent later. After you have found your way thought the maze of tents covering miles of ground you will find a dirt road leading you to the main area of the complex, otherwise known as the main runways of Griffis Air force Base.

Area 51 was created by the U.S. Government as a place to test top secret military weapons, especially military aircraft (“Groom Lake Air Force Base - Area 51”). It is located in a remote part of the desert in Nevada. None of the public is allowed inside of area 51 and no one knows what truly exists inside the gates, and what the government and the military are hiding in there. The government has dismissed most of these claims as testing aircraft and other weapons, but there are some that have never been solved and still remain a mystery today. People have often speculated what is inside and what exactly goes on inside the gates, but no one really knows, except the people who have worked there and are sworn to secrecy. Many believe that the UFOs seen near Area 51 and across the United States are U-2 spy planes that the military was testing there, however, there are some people who think the government is hiding a major secret there from the U.S. public, that there are aliens and extraterrestrial spacecraft being stored there.

The first place our sound guide took us to was the guard towers. They were about fifty feet tall and held enough room for maybe two guards. The towers looked too old for anybody to get into these days, but they had a view of a good portion of that side of the prison and a good section of the ocean. There were towers stationed the entire way around the prison with maybe 100 yards in between them. The towers were protected with bulletproof glass 360 degrees round. After viewing the towers Sean and I wanted to go see the prison cells. So we turned off our guide tapes for awhile and started heading up to the prison house. Everywhere Sean and I looked, it seemed like the entire place was just eroded. Some places were fenced off because they were not safe enough for spectators like ourselves to get close enough to look at.
Most people today believe area 51 is where the government store, and do research on the “alien ships”. Whether or not the Roswell incident truly involved a UFO remains unclear. How ever, the military cover-up only served to fuel the fire of our imaginations.
