Are We Distracted By Technology? Technology has continued to improve greatly throughout generations, to make our lives easier and higher quality. The current generation depends tremendously on technology for anything major, to simple everyday tasks. Constantly updated communication devices and social media makes things we never thought possible happen. Despite the many positive qualities that come with constant improvements of technology, there is a downside that is creating a generation that is continually distracted. The distraction people struggle with today, affects development, everyday tasks, and overall concentration. Technology with children has raised a concern regarding their brain and development. Many surveys have proven it affects children's attention spans in and out of school. People may think they are getting things done when they are “multitaskers” , little do people know that when multitasking, it is simply jumping from task to task, and an overload of the brain. “Their brains are rewarded not for staying on task but for jumping to the next thing,” said Michael Rich, an associate professor at Harvard Medical School (Ritchell). A study was done on students and how multitasking with social media worsened them as students. It proved that students who “multitask” are constantly distracted, due to checking their social media about every fifteen minutes (Soltan). As technology continues to evolve quickly, the priorities of people change. It even seems that technology has become more of a burden than an aid. Now that students have many forms of distraction, they discover that there is more options to choose over school work.
