Application of Nursing Theory: Orem’s Self Care Deficit Nursing Theory The theory being presented is Dorothea Orem’s self-care deficit nursing theory. Theory utilization in nursing is extremely important, theory helps to guide nursing research and nursing practice. There is a close and concrete circular relationship between theory, research, and practice that has been in existence since the beginning stages of nursing practice as a profession (Im & Chang, 2012). Theory utilization continues and will continue in the future to help guide nursing practice and research. Im and Chang (2012) state, “with evolutions and changes in nursing environments, theoretical thoughts in nursing have been developed, refined, and evolved in nursing history” (p. 156). According to O’Shaughnessy (2014) “a self-care deficit occurs when the relationship between demands for self-care are greater than the individuals current ability” (p. 496). When Orem’s theory is utilized the outcomes of the patients can be greatly impacted (O’Shaughnessy, 2014). Seed and Torkelson (2012) states that “the basis for the theory is to describe how and when nursing care is needed to assist patients who are unable to meet their own self-care needs” (p. 395). The strategy being used is the use of the Orem’s self-care deficit nursing theory in self-management of diabetes through specific patient education. Once the patient’s specific deficit(s) has been identified then the patient and their family can begin an education program on their disease process. Each patient will meet with their diabetic care coordinator and establish the following: an initial assessments, goal list, plan, implementation of the set plan, and
