After Caesar was killed, Antony and Brutus both gave rhetoric speeches at Caesar’s funeral. Both Antony and Brutus used many different methods of speaking to make their speech persuasive. Antony’s speech definitely won the people over and had the most effect on them. Overall I think that Antony’s speech was better and more persuasive than Brutus’s speech. Antony’s speech seemed much more personal than Brutus’s speech. In Act III, Sc. 2, Antony began his speech by saying, “Friends, Romans, countrymen..” (Line 70) In Act III, SC. 2 Brutus began his speech by saying, “Romans, countrymen, and lovers..” (Line 14) The way that Antony began his speech made it seem like he was a friend to them and also a friend of Caesar. He follows what they told him to say, but he twisted their words and made it very sarcastic. In Act III, Sc. 2, he said, “I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him.” (Line 71) Antony said he wasn’t there to praise Caesar, but during the speech he praises Caesar and the things that he has done for the public, many times. Antony also said that he was there to speak about what he knows and not to disprove of what Brutus said, but he was contradicting Brutus the entire speech, and talking good towards Caesar. Although the speeches were both very persuasive, I think that Antony’s was much more effective, and I understand why the people were with him. Antony used many strong methods of persuasion. He had a counterargument to almost every point that Brutus made. He said that Brutus was wrong, but in a very sarcastic and creative way. He also used the peoples’ sympathy to his advantage. He made it clear that he loved Caesar and that Caesar was a very kindhearted man. The only point that Brutus had was that he killed Caesar for the sake of Rome.
