Antonio López de Santa Anna was born on February 21, 1794 in Jalapa, Mexico. He served in the Spanish army and became a military captain. He fought for the Spanish against the Mexican war. Like many other army officers, he switched sides in 1821 in order to make sure Augustin de Iturbide is head of state of an independent Mexico. In 1823, he helped overthrow Iturbide. He supported and helped Vicente Guerrero become president in 1828, but also overthrew him later. Also in 1828, he fought against Spain’s attempt to reconquer Mexico. By 1833, he was elevated to president of Mexico. I don’t believe in what Santa Anna did. He was playing both sides in the Spanish against Mexican war. Lope de Aguirre, better known as the Prince of Freedom, was a Spanish soldier who partook in not only the Spanish conquest and exploration of South America, but later on led the rebellion against Spanish rule in parts of the continent. Aguirre is not only known for his extreme acts of brutality against Spanish leaders, but for being one of the first to claim himself as an American. He played a key role in the fight for independence against the Spanish monarchy. His great acts of violence against Spanish leaders placed him in control of the Island of Margarita (Venezuela), Panama, Chile, and Peru. His betrayal to the Spanish crown was frowned upon and he was soon thought of as a symbol of cruelty and treachery in Colonial Spanish America. Lope de Aguirre payed the ultimate price for his acts of cruelty and violence and was captured and killed by the Spaniards in 1561.
Juan Cortina served as a part of the irregular cavalry during the Mexican War and participated in many major battles under General Arista of the Tamaulipas Brigade. It is likely that he was very popular among his fellow soldiers, as he would later return to the region as governor.

After shooting a man who harassed his sister, Villa “fled, spending six years on the run in the mountains. While there, he joined a group of fugitives and became a bandit” (Biography.com Editors). As the head of the house, Pancho kept things in order as well as he could without a father to help him. When he fled to become a bandit, his whole life changed to that of an ordinary man to an outlaw. This is what could be known as Villa’s transformation into Mexico’s most well-known rebel generals. People like Celia Garza, however, transitioned in a much different way. When asked about the experience by her grandson, she simply told him, “I was inspired so I took action.” “In 1910, while still living as a fugitive, Pancho Villa joined Francisco's Madero successful uprising against Mexican dictator Porfirio Díaz” (Biography.com Editors). Pancho’s crazy life led him from the life of a bandit to the life of a rebel general, respected by many who disagreed with the way the President ran the country. In April of 1934 Santa Anna ousted Gomez Faias, and took control of the Mexican government. In a year Santa Anna had voided the earlier 1824 constitution and had replaced the Mexican Congress with his own appointed officials, who would agree with Santa Anna in all of his decisions, and he had established for himself a military tyrant rule. Santa Anna was referred to as the “Napoleon of the West” because of his military tyrant-like rule. Stephan Austin declared a call to arms on September 19, 1935. The first bloodshed came at the Battle of Gonzales on October 2 of that same year.

In the early 1900’s, one man bested the rival troops and used his intelligence to defeat the oppressive Mexican regime. Doroteo Arango Arámbula, also known as Pancho Villa, was born into a poor family and worked in the fields. Pancho Villa escalated from a peasant outlaw into a well-known revolutionary war strategist and folk hero. Pancho Villa could easily outsmart troops and use his popularity to help his cause for equality. His actions could not atone for any previous transgressions in his life of crime, but his tactics as a revolutionary war commander made him almost unstoppable when it came to fighting for equality. Pancho Villa was an important factor in the Mexican Revolution and its beginnings. He was one of the first revolutionaries to fight against the Mexican government, and successfully evaded and won fights against the United States government. His greatest achievement was the amount of influence he delivered the poor, and empowered them to fight for their rights.
I enjoyed reading Punished: Policing the Lives of Black and Latino Boys by Victor M. Rios because it was not only informing, but I could place myself as if I were one of the characters in the story. I could not even begin to imagine what these boys with through. From being beaten’ for no reason, to getting cuffed and sitting in the back of a cop car because they were eating a slice of pizza is absolutely ridiculous and should not be tolerated. Not only did I understand how these boys were in the networks of crime, but also, the criminalization, and punishment made sense and how I observed the higher authority took action. In my essay, I will be discussing three major concepts which are: moral panics, labeling , and code of the street.
There was a huge revolution in the country of Mexico that started in the year 1910, led by Porfirio Diaz, the president of Mexico in 1910. In the 1860’s Diaz was important to Mexican politics and then was elected president in 1877. Diaz said that he would only be president for one year and then would resign, but after four years he was re-elected as the President of Mexico. Porfirio Diaz and the Mexican revolution had a huge impact on the country of Mexico that is still felt in some places today.
When Father Hidalgo’s plans were discovered him and his fellow conspirators were forced to act. On September 16, 1810, Father Hidalgo gave his famous “Grito de Dolores”, “Cry of Dolores”, where he called upon the Mexican people to fight with him against the Spanish rule. Hundreds, which soon turned into 80,000, of people joined him and attacked Spaniards and looted cities. After a huge loss of Calderon Bridge, the rebel army scattered and the Spanish army found Hidalgo and Allende and executed them. The rebels do not give up and continued to fight a long and bloody war until 1828 when they won their independence. Julio Cortázar is a famous novelist from Argentina. He was born August 26, 1914 in Brussels, Belgium and died February 12, 1984 at the age of 70 years young. Otherness is the foundation of translation in almost every sense of the word. The translator must become the author's other, his Doppelganger, what Julio Cortázar called his paredros, using a Greek term for an old Egyptian concept of otherness. At the same time the translator must turn the author into another possibility of his own existence. The writer stays himself but is now writing in another language and therefore at least partially in another culture. Also, there will be more than one translation of a classic, meaning that even in its otherness the classic has other possibilities. Mandelbaum, Singleton, Sayers, and Ciardi are all partially Dante in that they are his others, yet they are not clones, not even identical twins, and usually not even close enough to be fraternal ones. Theirs is anotherness within the same language, different variations on the same theme as it were.
In the late 1500's after the disappointment of Coronado's non-glorious expedition was forgotten, Spain had a renewed interest in New Mexico. King Philip II needed a new conquistador to go to New Mexico to obtain and claim the 3 G's (Gold, Glory, and God) for the crown and for the country. The man chosen to fill this job was Juan de Onate. Being of noble Basque blood it seems that Juan de Onate was destined to become someone of importance. It is said that the Basque people were "Hardy, self-reliant, and stubbornly strong" and "In New Spain won distinction as explorers, soldiers, and discoverers of mines on the frontier." Juan's father Cristobal de Onate was one of those Basque people described above. In 1546 Cristobal along with a few other Basque men discovered a silver mine in Mexico, but was already rich due to his many encomiendas, his salary as a lieutenant-governor, and many other businesses he owned. Given Juan de Onate's tremendous wealth and outstanding family history King Philip thought that he had found an excellent conquistador, but would soon find out that he was wrong.
