Antigone Creon Traits

In the play Antigone by Sophocles Creon embodies the three traits of a Tragic Hero, Good, Lifelike, Consistent. Creon exemplifies the trait of good by wanting to do what is best for thebes by dealing with Antigone. Creon also tries to save Antigone after he realizes what he has done but is too late. He demonstrates the attribute of lifelike by being so sure that his ruling is right even though it might be wrong. He also is affectionate of his family's death and breaks down crying. He also mirrors the trait of consistent by not changing his ruling throughout all the criticism he receives. Creon is a clear and vivid tragic hero of Antigone.
Creon's trait of being a good person is a key factor in his tragic hero personality and makes his downfall even more dramatic. Creon does what he thinks is best for his nation of thebes by having the guards “take them away and guard them well” (p.62, L.10). The guards take Antigone to the vault to die and set Ismene free. Creon also tries to do good by being the one who “Will set her free” (p.75, L.24) because he is the one who made the wrong choice and put her in the vault first. An example of vreon being lifelike is when he is so sure he is right about the ruling of Antigone. When appointed by Haimon and told he is wrong Creon does not want to look weak and “Break [his] sworn word? No, [he] will not. The woman dies” (p.64, L.35-36) Creon does this so he looks strong to the people and so no one else breaks laws. His other lifelike qualities come out when he breaks down and wants to die after he causes all his family's deaths.
