Another savior in history who has helped his people while being dutiful to himself is Hamlet. Through the many characters, plots, themes, and symbols, Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, incorporates many Christian references into the play. Hamlet’s constant struggle in reaching peace within himself, and avenging his father’s death, takes the audience on a journey that touches upon the subject of religion and power. The questioning of how the death of old King Hamlet came to be, the story is often similar to the events and values present in the times of the Son of God, Jesus Christ. Evil is detected within Hamlet’s uncle Claudius, who has taken over the kingdom and the important people in his life. A savior is a figure that saves someone or something from danger, and that is exactly what Hamlet is doing in the play. In order to discover the truth and unveil it, he fights through perpetual battles with the help from his friend, Horatio. Hamlet is a savior to Denmark because he offers a sacrifice, he is a protector, he has a persistent mindset, and he is faithful.
From the death of his father, the late King Hamlet, he is often faced with thoughts of suicide, sin, and life after death. Through his first soliloquy, Hamlet contemplates suicide because he cannot deal with the pain from his father’s death and the new marriage of his mother, Queen Gertrude and his uncle Claudius. Following Christian values, he goes on to say that it would be sin to do so, “O, that this too too solid flesh would melt, Thaw and resolve itself into a dew! Or that the Everlasting had not fixed His canon ‘gainst self-slaughter!” (Act I, Scene II, line 129-132). Throughout his whole internal and external struggles, Hamlet continued to follow the set values and rules practiced and made by the savior. He did the ultimate deed in saving his people of Denmark, by giving up his own life. He found it important that the kingdom was not left with an immoral ruler, and this is a big reason why he is the savior and protector for his people. For the good of others, he sacrificed his own life and power that he could have had within the kingdom. To also give up his life and not take it himself, even when suffering through so much pain, for the good of others, that shows the values and ethics of a hero. In Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, the main character Hamlet is represented as a savior where he continues to protect his values while staying strong and providing a secure kingdom.
