Number the Stars The Danish people always had struggles, but they were always loyal to their great nation. They showed their loyalty by declaring to save their beloved king, by having resistance meetings, and by saving the Jews from being relocated. In the book the families have to work together to save their fellow citizens and save the great country of Denmark. The Johansen showed patriotism to their nation throughout the book. Many of the Johansens had declared that they would even take a bullet for their king, King Christian X. In Number the Stars, Papa tells Annemarie how Danish citizens love their precious and cherished king. He states “Any Danish citizen would die for King Christian, to protect him.” (p.14) Annemarie questioned her parents if they would do the same and they agreed. This shows the Danish people care about their king and will protect him from any danger. The Danes and the Jews formed the Resistance meetings as a way to fight back for their country. The resisters brought back hope to their nation and showed bravery as a result. In the story Annemarie’s older sister and her fiance, Lise and Peter, fought for their country even if it meant death. In the final chapter of the story, Papa told Annemarie who her sister truly was. He stated to her that “they were a part of a group that …show more content…

Constantly having the soldiers always on every street, they had to be careful of every word they spoke and every action they performed. Danes would usually save the Jews and cross the whistling waters to get to Sweden. It was always a dream for Annemarie and Ellen to see the magnificent and beautiful Sweden. In chapter six of the story the girls finally saw a glimpse of Ellen’s future home. “See over there? See the land? Way across there? That’s Sweden.”(p. 62) Annemarie pointed out to Ellen. This shows the girls’ excitement about the possibility of seeing Sweden and how close they were to saving
