The Space Race was a race to space between the Soviet and the US from the year 1957 to 1975. The Space Race was in the cold war, With all of the moves that the Soviet and the US were pulling. There had to be so many amazing achievements. Some of the most important and main achievements was the first man to ever get into space. Also on a mission the Soviets also sent up a dog, Which was the first animal in space but sadly died painlessly due to stress and low earth orbit. Also another huge achievement for the US that sealed the deal and got the US the victory was that they had the first man to land on the moon and also the first man to step foot on the moon.

The first achievement that I am going to talk about is the first animal to get into space. Her name was Laika and she was a homeless dog found on the streets of russia. Right as she was found she was being trained and she was getting ready to get launched into space. She was aboard Sputnik 2 and she was launched on November 1957. Many people thought this was animal cruelty but I do not think so, I think this is not animal cruelty because the soviets thought that she was going to live. His name was Neil Armstrong and he was apart a three person crew on the mission Apollo 11. The other two men that were there was Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. All of them were were trained and had experience and they trained very long for this one mission. This one achievement led to a win of the Space Race for the US. The Apollo 11 crew was in space for 75 hours and 50 minutes. This was Nasa’s first manned mission to space. When Neil Armstrong first stepped on the moon, He said these very famous words “That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.” -Neil
