The readings assigned to SW 6030 class are interesting and the author of the book “Human Behavior for Social Work Practice a Developmental-Ecological Framework” does a great job presenting different topics that are related to the social work field. For example in the book Haight & Taylor discuss the historical context of social work in the United States, stating that “social work originated in volunteer efforts to address issues resulting from the paradox increasing poverty in the increasingly productive and prosperous economies of Europe and North America” (Height, 2016, p. 4). Lieberman proposed that care receiving experiences characterized by intense shared affect between parent and child in which the child feels nearly perfectly understood, accepted and loved, provide the child with a core sense of security and self-worth that can be drawn upon when the child becomes a parent to interrupt the cycle of maltreatment (Lieberman et al., 2005). I consider that the author of this article does a nice job describing the attachment theory with Angels in the Nursery metaphor because human beings that are raised with love and acceptance will have a self-esteem that will help them deal with life’s adversities. On the other hand, the article of “Ghost in the Nursery” makes a good point describing how negative experiences in early development have lifelong lasting effects in human beings. I recognize that the author of the article “Angels in the Nursery” does a terrific job describing that we can create new, good memories to override and break the cycle of intergenerational maltreatment toward children. The patients that I work with at my practicum are people that ended up at the psychiatric unit because most of them have had unstable lifestyles since they were little. Clients’ culture is very important to keep in mind while we approach clients as a social worker because every person has developed a set of traditions that are part of their personal life or part of the community where they belong. It also can be part of the country of precedence of each client. As social workers, we have to be sensitive and culturally competent in order to create rapport with our clients. Oppression and discrimination are some of the cruelest forms that Native Americans, African Americans, Latinos and others have endured in the United States (Haight & Taylor, 2016, p. 280). The textbook mention white privilege as the unearned advantages, entitlement, immunity, and dominance of individuals considered to be white (Haight & Taylor, 2016, p. 265). As a Latina student, I can see how oppression and discrimination are hitting on undocumented people’s right in our society right now. I really do not understand how white privileged people can talk about illegal immigrants if we know that this country belonged to Native Americans and the white people came and stole these lands from them.
