Ang Lee was born in 1954 in Pingtung, Taiwan. Lee is one of the best film directors in today’s world, comparing him to water in title shows how versatile he is. Lee has produced almost every genre possible, like Romance, Kung Fu, Super hero action films, Tragedies and Drama. Lee pursued his high school education in Taiwan then he flew to the United States of America to complete his bachelor’s degree at the University of Illinois and then he got his master’s degree at the New York University. His career started during his final years at NYU, where he worked as an assistant director for a while at the university’s student film association. Lee was inspired to write some screenplays during his position as an Assistant Director; that lead him playing a role in a play known as Pushing Hands his first role in his life. Later in his career he directed eleven films, some of which were based on the novels such as the movie The Ice Storm based on the novel by Rick Moody. Lee also won several awards for his work that gave him the fame. Lee is a multilingual director as Taiwanese gentlemen he also produced some masterpieces in Taiwanese industry. But in order to get to this point of his life Lee had to struggle like any other person. Lee did not produce a single movie for several years after his graduation from NYU, but a new production company named Good Machine agreed to fund his first mainstream film with a low budget cost. His first movie leads to his popularity in Asia; that gave him opportunity to work further. In the film industry, there are directors who merely take someone else’s vision and express it in their own way on film, then there are those who take their own visions and use any means necessary to express their visions on film. The latter of these two types of directors are called auteurs. Not only do auteurs write the scripts from elements that they know and love in life, but they direct, produce, and sometimes act in their films as well. Three prime examples of these auteurs are: Kevin Smith, Spike Lee and Alfred Hitchcock.
Spike, born Sheldon Jackson Lee, is an American film director, producer, writer and actor known for his films that deal with controversial social and political issues. Though Lee has written small films prior, his first feature-length film was his 1986 She’s Gotta Have It and was a landmark independent film for American cinema. She’s Gotta Have It was shot in twelve days with a low budget but grossed in the box office at $7 million. This film helped Lee launch his career and create his own production company known as 40 Acres and A Mule Film works. The name of his production company came from the unfulfilled promise that many politicians made to freed slaves after the Civil War.
Chinatown is regarded by many as one of the best films ever created. In 2007, The American Film Institute named “Chinatown” as #21 on their list of 100 greatest films! Chinatown is a great film because it is able to show how far people are willing to go to obtain riches and how a detective is willing to go to great lengths to solve the mysteries in front of him. The movie has been talked about in abundance and has even been influenced by real life events from the water company in Los Angeles. Lisa Cholodenko grew up in Los Angeles and she began her film careers working as an assistant editor; however, she then moved to New York and earned an MFA in screenwriting and direction at the Columbia University School of arts. At Columbia University School of Arts, Cholodenko filmed her first short movie Dinner Party. Besides being a director, Lisa Cholodenko also was a film professor at Columbia University, an advisor and is currently on the Board of Governs of Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Science. It was surprising to be able to find out how active Cholodenko is in the film industry and in the university she attended. Although he began his career in the silent film area and continued to work fruitfully for decades after the thirties, Ford reached creative maturity in the thirties.
