It was a quintessential Saturday night with my whole family fast asleep. However, all of this tranquility was abruptly disturbed by a shriek of pain from my mother. The moment I heard it, I knew the water had broken. My dad rushed her to the hospital where the surgeons and anesthesiologists successfully performed the caesarean section. I was fascinated of how the anesthesiologist administered the anesthetics. So, I began researching about them and discovered many new things. First, you need communication skills. An anesthesiologist must be able to effectively communicate with their patients and other healthcare colleagues. For example, during a surgery, they have to tell the surgeon if the patient’s blood pressure and heart rate is stable. Secondly, you need compassion. This job can be tough; especially when they have to deal with patients in extreme pain and distress. Next, the job requires that you are detail oriented, have good dexterity, and posses leadership skills. They must ensure that the patients receive appropriate drugs and treatments. The first question I expect to be asked by every interviewer is "why anesthesiology now?" In 2012, after 6 years of post-graduate training, I was thrilled and elated to finally became a board-certified pediatric hematologist/oncologist. Three years later, I am ready to go back to residency. Pediatric hematology/oncology was one of my earliest rotations as a third year medical student and I fell in love with the pathology and, of course, the kids. After that rotation, I, perhaps naively, didn 't give much thought to other specialties and focused solely on pediatrics, going on to complete my pediatrics residency at the University of Michigan, followed by fellowship at the University of Colorado. Everyone has gone through some sort of change in his or her life. In my freshman year of high school, I felt like I underestimated my abilities and did not achieve my full potential. However, as I progressed through high school, I started doing more and achieving and exceeding goals that I set out.
