Alexandrine Paradis was an ongoing mysterious character throughout the novel. Andi’s adventure on reading Alex’s diary was an ongoing process throughout the book. So when trying to find the full story behind Alex, you had to read till the end to know all about Alex. The quote above illustrates a slight description of Alex’s past life and who she was. Though, Alex wasn’t the main character throughout the whole story, Andi, introduces Alex into the story. It all started with Andi discovering that her brother's key opens a secret compartment in the guitar case. Not only is her prose lilting and easy to lose yourself in, but it is sparse when needed and the words capture the raw emotions of these teenagers in a way nothing else possibly can. Although Bodee’s growth and hurt is only briefly touched upon throughout the story arc, we truly manage to delve inside Alexi’s head and heart, feeling her pain and sorrow and loneliness. While Alexi, unlike Bodee, still has her entire family with her, she is close with neither of them, least of all her sister Kayla whose dominating personality has always overshadowed her own. Thus, the relationship that blossoms between Bodee and Alexi, one of trust and friendship, carries so much weight throughout the novel. Moreover, the subtle romance that occurs between the two is understated, but heart-felt. For me, the best part is that the words “I love you” are never uttered – it doesn’t need to
In particular, she is distressed by her separation from Sara and “[t]o live alone, always alone” , without the knowledge of the codes of manhood that all the men around her know from lifetimes of experience. In fact, Alexina seems to be most distressed by the impossibility to fully embody this full identity, she describes herself as a “disinherited creature, a being without a name!” . Here Alexina’s description of her fate seems in direct opposition to Foucault’s argument regarding non-identity, her lack of full identity at this point, or lack of full classification into ‘normal’ roles, seems to be the cause of her distress not her happiness. In fact, in the final parts of her memoirs she expresses a hope that doctors and scientists will “analyse” her parts and “draw new information from it” . While it could be argued that Alexina’s hope here is not to be identified or classified, since she simply longs for information, the fact that she is so clearly distressed by being ‘nameless’ suggests that she finds no consolation in being ‘partly’ something. It could be argued then that the limbo state that Foucault describes is that state that Alexina embodies in her final moments, she is no longer a woman legally or medically and yet she is not fully a man either, she
Alex comes to the conclusion that “everything is illuminated in the light of the past.” Saying this at the end of the film, he gives the viewer a verbal representation of the theme. He also says something similar to “the past is inside all of us, coming out, much like the inside out shirt.” He is referencing Johnathan telling him his shirt was inside out. He does not understand this, and the miscommunication leads to him making this realization. The meaning behind this film, the importance of remembering events such as the holocaust, is one of the most important parts of the film. His gang participates in violent activities such as rape, stealing, vandalism, and many other malicious things. One of the worst gang scenes is in the book beginning of the book, which Alex calls, “the old surprise visit.”
