Ancient Egypt The purpose of my book and article is to inform the reader about ancient Egypt, the Egyptians, its history, etc. This protagonist in the book would be the Egyptian people and the Pharaohs. This is because they are the people that were currently living in Egypt at this time. In my essay I will talk about the history of ancient Egypt, life and the afterlife for the Egyptians, the Old, Middle, and the New Kingdoms of ancient Egypt, the Pharaohs, and the games during this time. Some text features I found in the book were: a table of contents on page which I was able to go back to when looking for the right pages on my topic, an index on page , and headings on pages 12, 14, and 16. The New Kingdom lasted from 1550 BC to 1070 BC which was the 18th to the 20th dynasty. At this time Pharaohs were not only viewed as a leader and ruler of an empire, but also as an important figure in religion and religious practice. The capitol was Thebes which was also the capitol during the middle age. The New Kingdom was known as the “ Imperial Age” because, it had prospered and was a new empire.
A Pharaoh was the most important and powerful person in the kingdom. He or she was the head of the government and high priest of every temple. The people of Egypt considered the Pharaoh half-man half-god. The ancient Egyptians referred to their kings and queens as Pharaohs. The first true Pharaoh of Egypt was Narmer (sometimes called Menes), he was the first king of the first dynasty/ the beginning of the old kingdom.
The games people played in ancient Egypt were very similar to some games people still play today. Some of their games were traditional African games, and others were learned from their West Asian neighbors. People in ancient Egypt played games with pieces like checkers or mancala or senet. Egyptian kids played games with knucklebones or small stones, like jacks. (Knucklebones are really the ankle bones of sheep). Sometimes they made artificial knucklebones out of clay. Pharaoh Khufu reigned about 2,551 - 2,528 B.C.E. It was during the old kingdom which is also called the Age of the Pyramids. It was called the age of the pyramids because during this time Pharaoh Khufu had the Great Pyramids of Giza built. Pharaoh Hatshepsut reigned about 1,473 - 1,458 B.C.E. This was during the new kingdom. This period of time is also called the Golden Age. It was called this because the Egyptian arts and architecture flourished under her rule. Trade also flourished under her rule.
Egypt has had many rulers among the eras, men were the only ones to rule. Not until the great Hatshepsut came into power, shortly after the passing of her father the throne was given to her young brother, he was too young to rule so Hatshepsut married her half brother and proclaimed herself as pharaoh. She was a pharaoh for two decades, and during her reign she ordered multiple buildings of projects and art work of herself.
The Egyptians were very polytheistic. Religion controlled every aspect of their lives. They believed in many gods, such as the Nile God and the pharaohs. The Egyptians believed the Nile was a god. The Nile River flooded every year, depositing silt onto the land so the Egyptians were able to farm and grow crops. Because of these actions, the Egyptians would pray to the Nile God to flood. Akhenaten had a dream to reform Egypt. He changed the way they worshiped, the way they lived and even the way they created art. His rule was a time of great change for Egypt, however his ideas and reforms were met with little support or enthusiasm. He used tremendous amounts of Egypt’s recourses and time for all his reforms, he also consumed a lot of his own time on these problems rather than on his pharaonic duties. During the 5th and 6th years of his reign Akhenaten set the boundaries for his new capital, Akhetaten, 350 kilometres north of Thebes. It was to be a city dedicated to Aten and all who worshiped him, however like most of Akhenaten’s reforms once his rule concluded, like so many other of his attempts to change Egypt, this too would be abandoned. When a member of the Egyptian royal family became pharaoh, he became much more than ruler of a mighty empire, he ascended to the rank of god. This position allowed the pharaoh to commission monuments to himself and to his reign, controls his subjects regardless of their rank, and maintain Egypt’s status among her enemies. Just as in any hierarchical governmental system, the pharaoh treated different classes of individuals and groups in different ways from the austere priest to the lowly peasant. He has been known as one of the best pharaohs that the world has seen. While Amenhotep was ruler of his era, it was known as the period of peace and prosperity. This allowed him to build many of the impressive structures that are found throughout Egypt today. He went on military campaigns and not only strengthened but expanded the boarders of Egypt throughout his campaigns. Amenhotep III was a successful pharaoh because he completed the roles of a pharaoh exceptionally well; these roles are High Priest, Administrator and Military commander. His name ‘Amenhotep’ means that the gods are satisfied.

There were three stages throughout the course of ancient Egypt, the Old Kingdom, the Middle Kingdom, and the New Kingdom. The Old Kingdom lasted from 2686-2181 BCE. The Middle Kingdom lasted from 2134-1690 BCE. The New Kingdom lasted from 1549-1069 BCE. Queen Hatshepsut reigned for 20 years of the New Dynasty.
Egypt was one of the first River Valley Civilizations. In Egypt there were big advances in art, math and science and also pottery. We still use the same number system and they even had fractions back in that time. During the Old Kingdom times the pyramids were built. The pyramids were tombs for the pharaohs of Egypt. These pyramids are one of the most popular historical sites in the world.
As king, the pharaoh had many duties that were civic and religious. The people saw him as the living Horus and the son of Ra. They believed only pharaoh could sacrifice to the gods and only the pharaoh could appoint the priests to serve the gods in his place. The people believed that he became Osiris after death and would continue to help his people in the afterlife. Pharaoh was the commander-in-chief of the army and the highest judge in the land. The people saw the pharaoh as essential for keeping their lives in balance and keeping harmony in Egypt. His rule was absolute.

In conclusion, Ancient Egypt has a very complex religion and beliefs that would be considered bizarre in many parts of the world. They believed in many gods, some took part in the creation of the universe. Others brought the flood every year, offered protection and took care of people after they died. The ancient Egyptians thought that it was important to recognize and worship the gods because they represented the peace and harmony across the land.
