I really like the three poems because the purpose of the three poems was to make a change about racism so others can understand. The first poem “ The Negro Speaks Of Rivers” really was fun to read because he uses his poem as imagery to explain how he raised himself. The term Negro is a respectful way of calling blacks African Americans. I like how the poem uses context clues, it made me think of ideas to understand what he’s talking about. One way of this is when he mentions about the soul was growing deep. I though his life was in severe as the days continued by due to racism. Again racism is towards african americans. White people didn’t accept an african for who he is. I find it disrespectful because he just wanted to eat in the table like a normal person. White people sent him to the kitchen to eat when people came over. It’s not fair how white people have different views of colored people and not showing respect. I don’t understand why white people feel this way towards the negroes, makes no sense to me. I’m glad that he came to the purpose that he is happy for who he is as a person inside and out. People who judge others should feel ashamed. Judging leads to nowhere but negative energy of hatred. I find it important for people to feel confident about themselves no matter what others would think of them. There’s many different kinds of race in this world that has an important special heritages other people don’t have. I think it was a good idea how he wanted to change the way how the whites were treating him so they can have a stop on judgement. I like the way his behavior led to a way of showing how many people can have the actions he did to end racism. First of alll, the poem is divided into nine stanzas, where each one has four lines. In addition to that, one can spot a few enjambements for instance (l.9-10). The overall themes of this poem are beauty, love, and destiny. The speaker constantly discusses beautiful things and how they can help us. Love can be felt throughout the entire poem. In the first stanza, the speaker verbalizes how he “came with love of the race.” He also expresses love for the beautiful things around him. The theme destiny can be seen in the third stanza when the speaker talks about staying on course. It can also be identified in the last stanza when he describes something inevitable that was about to
The two poems are two extreme sides of the Negro mentality. They do not leave opportunity for other Blacks to move. They are both required complete conformity. The short story was about Blacks weighting their options. It shows that Blacks can think logically about their action.
He took a stand to make a difference in something he was passionate about and he urged the American people to do the same. He made the audience realize that even if this law is passed there will always be times that We the American people will also have to take a stand to do what’s right. His speech is so well written it makes it seem like the only option is to vote for the law to be passed. In a way this speech inspired me to take a stand when something wrong is happening and make a difference. Living in a time period where this was a big issue would have been hard but, I think it needed to happen to show the world that just because your skin color or religion we are all American people and we all need to work together to make this place
African Americans were among the worst treated races in the US; however, this did not stop them from fighting for the rights that so many had died for. It seemed as if black people would never be treated respectfully, but just like in comic books, there is always a hero that will fight for his people. This hero soon came to the scene and he was fierce enough to change the lives of many people. Most importantly, he broke the color barrier and created a path that would allow others to follow. However, something that was inevitable was the threats and racial remarks they had to face.

Abandoned, he sinks into a trance of despair,” He uses these lines to show the lack of control he has over his actions, how his will to change his circumstances has weakened.

When Barack Obama was running for president and then became president of the United States, the results didn’t change, even though we were being exposed to an admired African American. George Wallace said while being inaugurated as governor “Segregation today, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever.” This does still hold true but not in the sense that he meant it. We still judge and make assumptions based on color and people self-segregate in some situations. We don’t ever know if it will ever really be equal, since we can’t change what happened over fifty years ago; but I think over time it will become less and less of an issue- it will still be present but not as distinct.
I’ve seen racism on a day to day basis, and I know how slavery has had long lasting effects on the advancements of the black community. It was compelling however to learn some of the logistics and facts of his argument and to understand even more how the government segregated people of color. I was pleased that he made this book promoting the truth and backing it with facts that a lot of white people like to deny. I feel it is Caucasians people duty to try and help educated other Caucasian people on the injustices in America and I applaud him for that. He was extremely well educated on the topic of his book and mentioned some upsetting and surprising facts and terms. I was able to learn about the de facto segregation I had been living in my entire life and exactly why. African Americans have waited and been abused by society, and this deepened and weathered their souls over time, just as a river would become deepened and weathered. Hughes’ soul, the collective soul of African Americans, has become “deep like the rivers” (5). This simile speaks that the rivers are part of the body, and contribute to this immortality that Hughes is so desperate to achieve for his people. Rivers are the earthly symbols of eternity: deep, constant, mystifying.

These opening lines of the poem identifies that the rivers Hughes is speaking about are older than the existence of human life. This indicates the rivers’ qualities of knowledge, permanence, and the ability to endure all. Humans associate “age” with these traits and the longevity of a river makes it a force to be reckoned with. Other times he spent glorifying how beautiful his beloved one was and how the beauty can’t ever be taken away. It makes it difficult for the audience to take his reason serious at times because at one point in the poem he seems to have contradicted himself. I found out that this poem had a portion of metaphors, similes, and imagery and personification throughout the entire poem. He begins the poem with a simile and ends it with a personification on the poem.
