Analyzing Eastenders
For my GCSE media coursework I have been asked to write about and
analyse a television soap or series. During the course of the
assignment I will be explaining the following;
Definitions of soaps and series,
Marketing,
Merchandising,
Audience,
Timings,
Plot/Issues,
Sub - plot,
Characters.
I have chosen to write about the popular soap, Eastenders. Eastenders
is a fictional drama soap about a small community living in East
London.
A soap is a television program that is all about peoples daily lives
and the events that happen. Soaps are ongoing, contemporary dramas.
Contemporary means that the plots and storylines are all based on on
real - life events that can and do happen to real people. Ongoing
means the plot of the soap is held out over the episodes. It is
continous. Soaps can be split into different categories such as,
countryside soaps, city soaps, or police soaps. Emmerdale is an
example of countryside soap, Coronation Street and Eastenders, as city
soaps, and The Bill as a police soap. The reason television soaps are
called soaps is because the soap used to be advertised on the side of
soap packets. Soaps always end with a cliffhanger. When I say
cliffhanger, I mean that the writers leave an episode with high
tension. This leaves the viewers wondering what will happen next, so
they need watch the next episode to see how the plot unfolds.
On the other hand, television series have a different way of keeping
the viewers interested. At the end of the episode they show you a
sneak preview of what will be happening in the next episode. I don't

people. She once made friends with a man called Terry, just to get her
hands on his money and have a job and a place to stay. Underneath,
Janine is lost and insecure, she has no family near her, and I think
she just wants someone to care for her. She is very good at pretending
to be something she is not. But, I would still like to be Janine
because she knows how to have fun and is very witty. Janine also knows
how to take care of herself. These are the reasons I admire her.
I watch Eastenders because overall, I find the program is really
realistic because they don't exaggerate the issues too much - unlike
other soaps. It is also fun and easy to watch. It doesn't matter if
you miss one or two episodes because it is so easy to catch up on the
plot.
Life is a struggle. All through their life meet an obstacle that they struggle to overcome, no matter what walk of life you will face struggle. Some struggles are ongoing and can only be overcome by the perseverance of those willing to fight to better themselves, and those they fight for. We see this in "The Street" by Ann Petry and "Angela's Ashes" by Frank McCourt. Wherein the characters presented struggled to overcome the obstacle of poverty, poor living condition, and malnutrition, and ultimately persevered. When met with an overwhelming obstacle to succeed and overcome it, one must persevere and only then through their actions and strength of character will they overcome the obstacle at hand.
After reading the directions and topic for this paper, I was extremely eager to get started. Adolescence is a stage of life that is very critical for a person. Speaking from my own experience, I know that the teenage years are a difficult part of life and during these years, one experiences a rollercoaster of different emotions, obstacles, and decision-making. Aside from the topic of Adolescence, I was glad that I could choose which movie I wanted to watch, and that was an easy decision. I decided to watch Sixteen Candles. The older I get the more I started to understand the true meaning about the different shows I’ve watched. It’s one of those topics we’re all too afraid to touch, which is exactly why it’s so important to talk about. The autobiography Angela’s Ashes by Frank McCourt tells the life of the McCourt family while living in poverty in Limmerick, Ireland during the 30’s and 40’s. Frank McCourt relates his difficult childhood to the reader up to the time he leaves for America at age nineteen. The book has many prevailing themes, but one of the most notable is the settings relationship to the family. The setting of the book ultimately influences the choices and lifestyle of the McCourt family in many ways.
In Evicted by Matthew Desmond, Desmond examines the complex nature of poverty and elucidates on the housing dilemma that prevents the poor from breaking from the vicious cycle of poverty. Desmond examines the lives of eight American families from different backgrounds and races and records their life stories. By documenting the struggles and difficulties that they face, Desmond demonstrates that even though the United States is one of the wealthiest countries in the world, it still has much ground to cover to try to untangle the complex nature of poverty in order to find productive solutions.
The Buffy the Vampire Slayer series is a very popular show that engages well with most youthful audiences, including teenagers and young adults. Teenagers are quickly captivated by the show’s great amount of comedy, adventure, and science fiction. Although it is remarkably entertaining, the show also teaches important life lessons pertaining to love, friendship, and family. In the episode “Hush” from the series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the theme that through clear acts, one can develop clarity in relationships is presented.

In the late nineteenth century people obtained more freedom. The American rags to riches story struck a chord with many people and they tried to change their social class. For some, even with new opportunities in life, it would be hard for them to climb the class ladder. Many people live lives full of hardship and obstacles, such as Maggie Johnson from Stephen Crane's Maggie a Girl of the Streets, who grows up in the slums of New York City. Edna Pontellier from Kate Chopin's The Awakening lives a life of extravagance and wealth but still ends up dying a sad and lonely death because she makes poor decisions. Maggie also dies in a tragic death, but not because of bad choices, but because of the situation she finds herself in throughout her life. Maggie's situation turns her into a victim and facilitates her tragic death while Edna makes herself into a victim and causes her own death.
First titled Life and Stuff, Roseanne aired its first season in 1988 and its last season in 1997. The show starred Roseanne Barr as Roseanne Conner and John Goodman as Dan Conner. The couple lived in Lanford, Illinois with their three children Becky, Darlene, and D.J. They are a blue-collar, working-class family with both parents working outside of the home. They struggled just to pay the bills and put food on the table, sometimes each working two jobs. It portrayed real life issues such as pre-marital sex and pregnancy, financial struggles, sexuality, infidelity, death, drugs, and much more. Dan (Goodman) works as a self-employed drywall contractor for his company, Four Aces Construction. In season two, Jackie decides to become a police officer and begins a serious relationship with Gary (Brain Kerwin). Her solitary behaviour in the opening scene is quite disturbing. Especially after drinking some of Stanley's liquor, she "washes out the tumbler at the sink" - it immediately prompts that question of what. she is hiding in the dark. Already, she is not appearing too stable as we. later learn, she is hiding a lot about her past as well as her reasons....
The children’s television show I chose for this assignment was Scooby Doo, Where Are You! As this show is no longer on Cartoon Network or Boomerang I watched an episode from a DVD, as I own the series. In this episode, The Haunted House Hang-up, the gang is on their way to a rock festival. Instead they end up at a haunted house where there is apparently a Headless Specter. They get involved in the mystery as usual finding clues until they unmask the person.
