The article that I have chosen, that pertains to my book, is called “Why cannibalism is bad for you”. I have chosen this article because it talks about cannibalism which is one of the main horrific parts of my book. It talks about why being a cannibal is really bad for you. I mean the people in my book are not technically human but they do have to survive off of human flesh they look human but they aren’t, however eating people is the subject of the article and the book.

The argumentative article “More Pros than Cons in a Meat-Free Life” authored by Marjorie Lee Garretson was published in the student newspaper of the University of Mississippi in April 2010. In Garretson’s article, she said that a vegetarian lifestyle is the healthy life choice and how many people don’t know how the environment is affected by their eating habits. She argues how the animal factory farms mistreat the animals in an inhumane way in order to be sources of food. Throughout “Shattering the Meat Myth”, Freston attempts to convince her audience that eating animal protein is detrimental to the health of humans. While most vegetarian diets (if followed with precision) are very healthy, practicing a diet that involves meat is not necessarily as deteriorating as she implies. Freston quotes Dr. William C. Roberts, editor of American Journal of Cardiology, pertaining to subject of saturated fats and cholesterol. He states, “When we kill animals to eat them, they end up killing us…” (Freston). This statement however is an example of oversimplification and an appeal to bathos, referencing the power of death. The Hungry Soul: Eating and the Perfecting of Human Nature, by Leon Kass takes a unique view of examining the body and soul by focusing on the eating habits of human beings. He uses this in order to distinguish humans from animals and the divine element (God). In this book, Kass touches on the point of sanctified eating. In Kass' final chapter, he looks at the "created order", the dietary laws in the chapter of Leviticus in the Holy Bible and the problem of eating. BSE has been seen to progress very slowly in relation to other diseases, however is very contagious and fatal for not only cattle, but humans as well. While many diseases that are transmittable from animals to humans will affect the young or older humans, the median age of those infected with Mad Cow Disease is 26 (2). BSE has been linked to a fatal brain disease in humans referred to as variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease or vCJD. Eating meat from an infected cow is what many presume to be the cause of vCJD in humans (3). Symptoms include movement deficits, memory disturbances and cognitive impairments, all of which lead to an eventual death. The majority of the BSE cases reported have primarily been outside of the United States; from 2003 to 2012 23 cases were identified in North America, 4 of which in the United States (1). This may seem to be a small amount, however because it is believed to be transmitted through the meat of cattle it can be extremely dangerous and be shipped all over the United States before it is ever identified.

Typical Western thought directs people to examine the practices of cannibalism as savage and primitive. More often than not, this type of association exists because the people viewing the action are frightened and confused by that which they do not understand. In fact, some would even claim that, “cannibalism is merely a product of European imagination” (Barker, 2), thereby completely denying its existence. The belief that cannibalism goes against “human instinct”, as seen in many literary works including Tarzan, reduces those who practice it to being inhuman. (Barker, 1) However, scientific findings demonstrate that those who practice cannibalism are still human despite their difference in beliefs; therefore, not only can rationalization be extrapolated from those who practice the act of cannibalism, but also denying the fact of the participant’s very humanity has been undermined through scientific findings.
This article was explaining the reasons behind why people think that eating meat is alright. It was kind of supporting my action therefore my thoughts about eating meat still remain the same. I’m going to continue eating meat even after reading this article. The article does have some arguments as to why vegetarians don’t eat meat. Reasons that people decided not to eat meat included moral responsibilities and concerns for every animals. Another reason included meat being disgusting because it could contain pathogens that made people sick. These reasoning prompted me to consider becoming a vegetarians however I know that I can’t become a vegetarian. It was in my nature to eat meat. Since I can’t became vegetarians, I was planning to reduce my meat intake a little. Instead of eating pigs, beefs, fishes, and turkeys, I planned to just eat chicken for now on. For each meal, I planned to just have less meat than I would usually eat. Because I cooked my own meals most of the time, I could change the amount of chicken meat I put into my meal. Eating unhealthy food has a vast effect in our lives. We may become obese and get prone to diseases like diabetes, heart diseases etc. This will affect our life and also the people around us. Research by BBC says that 10-11 year old children in UK are obese while one in three is overweight. Another study says about teenagers suffering from diabetics. So when we start thinking the causes for this issue, it’s because the junk food is cheaper than most healthy foods. Take for example a Hamburger in McDonald is 35 cents whereas one salad will cost around $2. So obviously people will go for junk food because it’s cheap, easily available and it’s tasty. The taste factor plays a important role here.
Many people don’t believe think anything of what they eat or how it got there. But the harsh truth is the meat that you eat was once a living, breathing creature that had feeling and emotions. Maybe next time you order a steak or chicken nuggets you should think about the animals that went through extreme pain and conditions for you to eat. Not only is it inhumane to put animals through such pain, not eating meat and having a vegetarian lifestyle can have huge benefits to animals, the environment, and your health.
The process of killing animals for meat has been an important part of the human evolution. As meat consumptions greatly increase, the meat production industry led to many undesirable drawbacks. Fortunately, the alternative of vegetarian diets can lead to beneficial outcomes. The practice of vegetarianism is beneficial because it can lower the risks of getting diseases and at the same time, provide a healthier alternative to a meat diet. I think that it’s important for everyone to have knowledge about their well-being and choosing a healthier lifestyle.
There are many ways to die. Old-age, sickness, and starvation are common ways in the world today; however, being killed and eaten is not as typical. Cannibalism happens in various religions and for survival and sadistic purposes and is still happening to this day, but being a cannibal has some pros and cons when it comes to health.
