Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on September 30, 1924, Truman Capote went on to becoming a professional writer, making a great influence with the production novel In Cold Blood established in 1966. The book was a ground-breaking form of narrative non-fiction. In Cold Blood describes the issues of class and race raised by Dreiser and Wright was joined by a concern for the emotional aspects of the criminal and the use of the madness defense in court. His flamboyant and well-documented lifestyle has often overshadowed his gifts as a writer, but over time Capote’s work will outlast the celebrity (Capote).
In Cold Blood is a work of art, and gave a true meaning to life itself. Capote referred to In Cold Blood as “New Journalism”. He said that he wanted to bring the art of the novelist together with the techniques of journalism. There is much truth in it, whether or not it is “true” is at least debatable (Garrett,80). This provoking book generates the kind of deep interest and deep discussion. Truman invented the genre of true crime. In Cold Blood is not a tragic drama but an intervention on reality (Dakes, 69). Its dramatic interest lies in the dramatic class of murders and the pursuit of the criminals. The material of In Cold Blood is to some extent a return to Capote’s childhood and a real-life confirmation of his earliest imaginative creations and techniques (Nance, Page 626). In Cold Blood consumed more than six years of his life, but it won him enthusiastic praise, mountains of publicity, and millions of dollars (Krebs,320). The novel tells the story of the murder of the Clutter family, consisting of Mr. and Mrs. Clutter and their two teenage children, and the events that lead the killers to murder. It also makes people think of things in a new perspective. In Cold blood makes you see how an average person can suffer from internal conflicts and how a cruel person can attempt to be noticed and cared for. Capote also gives the reader enough information for both the victim and the murderers Dick and Perry. If Perry wasn’t treated so poorly in his childhood maybe he wouldn’t have become an emotionless killer. In Cold Blood should be for people all ages, including teens in high school. The book would show the reader that things aren’t what they always seem to be. This reader felt In Cold Blood was thrilling and kept the reader wanting to read more. In Cold Blood kept the reader engaged and it was an exciting novel.
