The shadow of Victor Frankenstein
In the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelly, the scientist, Victor Frankenstein, an intelligent, curious, most importantly an extremely ambitious man, whom had a strong interest in reading the works of from the ancient alchemists and was fascinated by science and the “secret of life”. Due to his obsession with knowledge and ambitious of getting recognition, he decided to create life using old human’s body parts. When the creature finally came to life, he abandoned the creature once he saw it because the creature did not turn out from what he expected. In the film “Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein” directed by Kenneth Branagh. He reinterprets the novel under his interpretation, which helps us, the audience, to have a better understanding of the novel and have a visual impact on the scene. The birth scene of the monster begin at 00:43:30 and end at 00:48:30. This scene is very remarkable as it shows the process of how Victor created the monster and how enthusiastic Victor was during the process. In addition, the scene between 00:47:25 and 00:48:30 illustrated the connection and bond between Victor and the Monster. When the Monster first come out of the “tank”, he was unable to walk and even stand on his own. Victor offers his help to the monster; however, he failed; as the floor was too slippery, they fell together. It is clearly shown that there were similarity and connection between them. The connection between them can be interpreted in different ways: light and shadow, master and slave, love and hate, father and son, innocence and evil. Undoubtedly, they were each other partner, they shared a similar experience of isolation, anger and were both rejected by the society under different circumstances, whereas Victor with his pursuit of knowledge and the monster with his inhuman appearance. The creature learns about life base on observing and experiencing. Through Victor’s notes, he understands more about himself and about Victor, the more he learned the more similar he becomes Victor. The tragedies that Victor created due to his selfishness was not only to himself but also to the creature. Ironically, the creature is a better person inside than Victor was.
