In E.E. Cummings poem “dying is fine) but Death”, the poet talks about the the ever discussed topic about dying and Death itself. Cummings talks about how dying is something to look forward to and how it is inevitable, from the moment we are born, to the fateful day it occurs. I agree with this analysis and the author’s analysis of the poem. Cummings uses his legendary shape style to form “dying is fine) but Death” to show how life begins. He may have wanted to symbolize the start of life with “o baby” which if you look at the paper version of the book, “o baby” is split up and very small compared to other sentences in the poem, signifying the start of someone’s life. In the poem, if you don’t stop and think over what you are reading, you will miss the big picture and not enjoy it as much. In Life, if you keep thinking about the big goal in your mind, then you forget to stop and cherish the little things, making Life that much harder to get through. I found in my own analysis that the poem switches from a sort of sweetness to dying, but to Death the tone is completely bitter and makes Death seem evil, because in the poem it is. There is probably no one, among people, who has not considered death as a subject to think about or the events, people, and spirits that they would face after death. Also, since we were little kids we were asking our parents what death is and what is going to happen after we die. People have always linked death with fear, darkness, depression, and other negative feelings but not with Emily Dickinson, who was a reclusive poet from Massachusetts who was obsessed with death and dying in her tons of writings. She writes “Because I could not stop for Death” and in this particular poem she delivers a really different idea of death and the life after death. In the purpose of doing that, the speaker encounters death which was personalized to be in a form of gentleman suitor who comes to pick her up with his horse-drawn carriage for a unique death date that will last forever. In fact, she seems completely at ease with the gentleman. Additionally, their journey at the beginning seems pretty peaceful; as they pass through the town, she sees normal events such as children who are playing, fields of grain, and a sunset. After this, dusk takes place and the speakers gets chilly because she was not ready for this journey and she did not wear clothes that would make her feel warm. Consequently, readers get the idea that death is not a choice, so when it comes, that is it. Addie is actually the perfect character to try and describe the lack or void of words and meanings. The very fact that she is dead and is talking about this void from the dead is important. We can clearly see that the beginning of each line is not capitalized and that some thoughts are stopped, such as “to” and “attention” from line to line. When looking at the second stanza there is assonance. In the phrase “and kisses are a better fate” (Cummings, 1931, L.8) the “e” sound is the same in these words. We can see assonance again in the line “wholly to be a fool while spring is in the world” (Cummings, 1931, L.5-6) the “o” sounds in the words “to” and “fool” are the same. The speaker is discontent because of human nature; the searching for something better, although there is none.
