The past week on October 1st I attended the play Tom Jones presented by the Butler community college musical theater cast. They did a wonderful job on opening night, I would definitely go see it again. The Butler Community College Theater Department produced this with the help of the Bob Peterson and the cast of the production. This play was performed at the Butler arts building in there theater. The audience I thought was focused on the play and loved the way they set up the stage. When Brandon McKinney (Partridge) came out he got the audience’s attention right away with his comedy. One big major achievement was that Jones finally ended up with Sophia. Also when Blifil got caught trying to put Jones in jail. This play had so many great thematic choices throughout the whole play. Just to start out by pointing out the design of the stage. There was so many things you could think of what the play is going to be about. Also all of the doors they had on stage made stage changes not so noticeable and didn’t take up much time. The sound effects was another big thing for the play and really made the audience laugh at the right time. Another thing I liked is how they had flyers go through the front of the stage telling the audience where the play is at or just something to make them laugh. I don’t think most people noticed the back light would change color, I did on the other hand and was a little confused on what the color meant sometimes. Blifils facial expressions were a big hit with the audience and really made the play funny. The slow motion was a big surprise to me when the lights started flickering and the actors all slowed up. Jones really took his part on very well with how he acted with the girls. It really came off to me that I thought he was in love with Sophia, until he started messing with all the other girls. The plot of the play was definitely showed by how the actors acted and the introduction to the play said my McKinney. The introduction I thought really pulled in the audience and told them where the plot was starting and giving them a short summary. All of the characters really executed there part and made the audience believe everything they were doing. Such as when Terrell was kissing the girls it really showed that he was in love and set the mood for the audience. The theme was excellent and everybody on the stage and off the stage made this play worth watching. Although there was one mess-up and that was when somebody on the cat walk dropped napkins and fell on the audience. That is a mistake that should not happen! This major production for Venice Theater was a success in my opinion. It was well worth doing; as I cant remember a moment that was not full of laughter from the audience, as this play kept everyone on the edge of their seats. They did a fantastic job finding actors and actresses who did outstanding with their rolls. Any escapist would thoroughly enjoy this production.
What was the narrative of the show, who were the characters, and director? Love Jones the Musical is a makeover of the movie Love Jones directed and written by Theodore Witcher. The film starred Larenz Tate - as Darius Lovehall, and Nia Long - as Nina Mosley. The musical produced by Melvin Childs is touring around the country. I was able to catch an evening show of the shows only two nights held at the Kings Theater in Brooklyn. The stars of the musical are Tony Grant - as Darius Lovehall, and Chrisette Michelle - as Nina Mosley. Singers Musiq Soulchild, MC Lyte, Marsha Ambrosius, Raheem Devaughn, and Dave Hollister played themselves. The musical like the movie takes place in Chicago. The plot was also similar to that of 1997 movie in which Darius a poet and Nina a photographer gets together and fall in love. Trials and tribulations test their relationship, but the couple proved that black love is strong by overcoming their obstacles in the end.
In conclusion I think that the stage directions and dramatic irony are significant to the play, and without them there would be no need for a lot of the events that happen in the play.
I have no negative comments about the play. I really enjoyed this production of Guys and Dolls and believe that the director's vision was clearly dispayed on the stage by the actors, the musical ensemble and the production team. I thought the set design was amazing and that the costumes perfectly portrayed the style of the 1940s. All of the hard work and dedication put into the play, showed through the actors and the set resulting in a wonderful musical worthy of Broadway.
One of its numerous strengths was the costuming and set. This musical would not have been the same had these elements not come together to transport the viewer. In addition to the costuming and the set, the actors were very well cast. Each actor was in a role that fit them and they portrayed their characters very well. For example, the man who played Glen really seemed like a greedy Wall Street worker. The choreography was also well done. It fit true to the style of dance in the 1980s and added to the immersion experience. The only thing that could have made this experience better would be to add more music. This may just be a personal preference, but when I see a musical I like for the music to be central like it is in Hamilton or Les Miserables. In conclusion, the acting in the production was very good. I was held captivated by the accents and shocked by the language and dialect because I knew that this really happens and has happened. I felt like I could actually change what was happening on stage. For Instance, when the rumble is happening and Bernardo and Riff bring out the switchblades, I gasped. Silently to myself, I said "DON'T DO THIS. THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A CLEAN FAIR FIGHT. YOU GUYS ARE MORE SIMILAR THAN YOU ARE DIFFERENT, JUST BEING FRIENDS." For a college production, the acting was outstanding. I really felt the emotions. The lead Wendla, who was played by KyLeigh Zimmerer, was amazing. I have also seen bits and pieces of the Broadway version which starred Lea Michelle, and obviously if I were to compare the acting, the Broadway version would be victorious. However, for a college production, these actors have limited past experience, but their acting was professional. Also, when they sang the song "Those You've Known," I felt chills and had goose bumps because that was such an emotional song. You could feel all the emotions and guilt Melchior, played by Ryan Ramirez, was feeling because both his best friend, Moritz, played by Justin Noblitt, and the girl he impregnated, Wendla, died and he believed he was to blame. The play I went to see was The Music Man performed by the Mesa Encore Theatre at the Mesa Community College. I saw this performance on November 20th. The main performers in this play were Zac Bushman as Harold Hill and Lauren Koeritzer as Marian Paroo. Alongside them, a mix of both adults and children as young as 8 acted in this production. The cast and crew used appropriate clothing to match the time and place. Lights were utilized scarcely, with not much more than spotlights or front and back lights. The set was extravagant, cute, and fitting for the setting and time. Overall, this musical was vibrantly performed and left me with positive impressions regarding presentation and production.

The production had many elements which for the most part formed a coalition to further the plot. The characters, the three part scenery and costumes represented well the period of time these people were going through. As far as the performers entering and exiting the stage, it could have been more organized. There were a few times when the performers exited at the wrong times or it seemed so due to the echo of the music. At certain moments the music was slightly loud and drowned the performers. Many of the songs dragged on, so the pacing could have been more effectively executed. Though the music was off at times, the director's decision to have most of the songs performed center sage was a wise one. Also the implementation of actual white characters that were competent in their roles came as a great surprise to the audience and heightened the realism.
The audience, for the most part, seemed to be made up of college students attending for the same reasons as myself. However, there were some audience members who are part of older age groups in the audience. They were there only seeking a good performance and a great time. These older age group audience members were located mostly in the center section of the theatre seated in the first few rows. The dress was more casual among the students but dressier for the older people. Some people were in jeans and a T-shirt, including myself, while some wore nice clothes. The audience rewarded each soloist with a warm ovation of applause after their turn was finished. This led me to believe the audience enjoyed the performance and was very respectable to the performers.

Since this is a review and its based on my opinion, I would have to say this was one of the worst plays I've ever seen in my life. I wasn't entertained by the play at all. The only good parts were the good-looking girls in the play. I like the main character Marisol based only on her looks. She played on ok job of acting. I realize she had a lot of lines to memorize which she had down, but she just didn't get to me. I think the costumes were ok. They had nothing special, or out of the ordinary except for the angel's wings, which were pretty nice. I didn't like the lighting or the scenery. I didn't know where the scene was supposed to be at some points.
Whether they were a drunk or a punctual control freak, each actor clearly put a lot of thought into their work. Each actor was fully committed to every action they made and they moved with a definite purpose. Despite the definite movements and the definite character choices made by the actors, there still appeared to be a sense of forced emotion in their words. For example, the man acting as the drunkard overplayed the alcoholic, hung over, and stereotypical wobbly walk. He made a few obvious mistakes, like flubbing up lines and other things to that effect, and it appeared to be because he was trying so hard to look and act drunk that he forgot to act. The woman playing Daisy was, in fact, one of the best. She had few mistakes and played her role the most realistically out of all the actors. The blocking of the play allowed for a few characters to upstage themselves and others, which made it hard to hear some words and conversations, but besides that, the technical aspects of it were good.
There wasn’t any particular scene on stage that made me doubt the integrative work of the director since all the staging work such as lighting, design, costumes and performance were well coordinated and blended for a very good production. The lights were well positioned with well fitted costumes and a very ideal scene to match. There wasn’t much change of scenes in the play except for some movement of tables and chairs. There was an entrance and exit for the performers which made their movements uninterrupted. There was a loud sound of a bell when school was over while the lights were dimmed whenever there was a change of scene. The pace of the production was very smooth since one scene followed the other without delay and most likely because most of the performers wore the same costume; especially all eight students wore the same costume for the entire
