Wit sheds light on the problems within the American healthcare system regarding patient care and making decisions based on the well being of the patient, and not focusing on the scientific developments that can be made by studying the effects of certain drugs and illnesses on patients - this is done through the interactions between Vivian and her two doctors: Dr. Kelekian and Dr. Jason Posner, as well as interactions between Vivian and her nurse, Susie. From the beginning of the movie, Wit, Vivian Bearing is at the mercy of the medical staff around her. Her primary oncologist, Dr. Kelekian, makes it very clear that the chemotherapy she will be receiving is very strong, and that she needs eight full doses. He pressures her to make sure she takes the full dose every time she gets the therapy, if she can tolerate it. However, he makes it very clear that it would show weakness if she says she can’t tolerate it. …show more content…

It is a habitual question, asked out of obligation, not out of concern. It is also made very clear that Vivian’s other doctor, a resident named Jason, cares more about the research to be done on Vivian’s cancer and chemotherapy, than he is with Vivian. He is only doing a cycle of patient care because it is required of him. He is much more interested in research, and is not that invested in the patients
