Ever been to a drunk driving trial? On Wednesday the 5th of October, I would experience a very touching event. This event was called the Mock Crash Trial put on by the sorority Pi Beta Phi. They held this in the auditorium of the Student Union. The event was attended by many students involved in a variety of greek organizations as well as any other student that attends The University Of Toledo. This event overall was very quality. They loaded the auditorium with people as a judge sat on the top of the stage. They escorted in a :criminal” in. Later we would learn he was a drunk driver. The point they were getting across is the lasting and immediate impact and consequences if you drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. They projected this very well by making the teens parents who was killed prosecute the drunk driver, Scott. They went over the pain and agony that losing their daughter has caused them. Then the judge went over the time in jail Scott would have to serve, the money he would have to pay, and how he would have to cover the costs of the funeral and other events for the family. They had a narrator read all about Scott, the teenager who is being charged with DUI. The narrator would explain how bright Scott’s future was. What he would go on to accomplish and how he was a ontrack senior in college. Now that is all gone. His future was shattered because of the choice he made to drink and drive. His job he had lined up, gone now because of the years he would spend in prison. His plan to have a family? Now shattered because how would he care for a family until he is released from prison. It is sad to see this happen to White because if she had not made the choice to get behind the wheel intoxicated, she could have prevented this whole situation. It made matters worse when White found out she killed two young girls. Before going to jail, White looked at her own children and immediately thought of the two girls she killed. She had children of her own, so whenever she thought of her children, she was reminded of the two lives she killed. She couldn’t imagine her life if the two girls were her own daughters. She not only changed her own life forever, but she greatly impacted another family. Thinking about this situation, I can’t imagine altering my life or someone else’s life in this traumatic way. This particular aspect left an impression on me because I would not be able to live with the guilt of killing two young children. The courthouse was crowded, all seats were taken and many were standing in the back. It was silent, no one spoke, not even a baby cried out. There was the Judge sitting in the front of the room, the defendant, the solicitor, and the jury. I was a member of the jury that day. Everyone knew the truth, the defendant was innocent, and the evidence that was established was supportive and clear.
In the year 2001 more then 800,000 injuries occurred in the United States from alcohol related accidents, while more than 40% of automobile crashes were due to the abuse of alcohol (MADD homepage). These overwhelming statistics are just a small piece of the very large puzzle that stuns the nation with deaths every year. For some people, these statistics are more than just phrases on paper they are words that are haunting reminders of the tragedies and losses they have experienced in their lifetime. One such mother was so distraught by the loss of her thirteen year old daughter Carrie Lightner, who was killed by a drunk driver, began the organization Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). On the other side of the country another mother was feeling the same pain as her five and a half month old daughter, Laura Lamb, took her last breath after a drunk driver struck their car. Overall, I think that this experience was a great way to see how law and society interact with one another in order to bring order and conformity to the community. I was interesting to see how in the post-arraignment the threat of a more severe punishment as a deterrent is used to keep individuals from getting into further trouble with the court. It’s apparent that the use of the justice system will always be needed in order to keep order in a continuously changing society and spending just a couple of hours at the courthouse is a great way to learn about what behaviors society finds to be unjust and in need of reprimand.
The increasing penalties for getting caught as a drunk driver have increased over the years. The government has taken measures to educate teenagers about the dangers of drinking and driving and the many lives that could be lost. Schools such as Los Amigos High School have taken the responsibility to educate these teens towards the dangers of drinking and driving with the assistance of The National Every 15 Minutes Organization (www.every15minutes.com). This organization seeks to give students the opportunity to feel first hand the effects of drinking and driving with out the risk. Measures such as the ones taken through the Every 15 Minutes Organization would not be taken if the institutions and people had not sought to end prohibition and still try to protect the lives of those that they care about.

In this generations, where alcohol is cheap and very accessible many tends to abuse it. Cody sat on the footstool with his head low, his face was filled with sadness as he listens to his wife say that she was leaving him for an interesting life in Niagara Falls. Cody jumped up before his wife could leave the house, with his whole body, he stretched his arms and legs out as he block the door. He didn't want his wife to leave and his expressions showed how much he cared, and wanted her to stay. Cody then ran across the room to pick up a plate of food and he jumped onto the bed with it. He began to speak in a high tone and told his wife to take the plate of food because she had a long bus ride to Niagara Falls. For the first mock trial held in class, the case of the stolen lunch, I did not have a large role. I chose to be a part of the jury, which I feel gave me an immense feeling of responsibility and really allowed me to deeply analyze the case as it was being presented. Within this case, Mary Ovechkin, the plaintiff, had claimed that her lunch had been stolen and ate by the defendant, Sammy Crosby. My first expectation of this case, before it had actually started, was that the defense and prosecution would each have time to present their cases. I expected both sides to question those who were involved, such as the witnesses, defendant, and plaintiff. Then I expected to have to come up with my own verdict to share with the rest of the jury based on the evidence presented. Based on my role, I expected to learn how the jury reaches their decisions.
