The Inexplicable Logic of My Life Reading Response Although Saenz’ novel, The Inexplicable Logic of My Life, moved extremely slow at first for me, it unpacks a lot. His almost poetic prose provides a beautifully written story in short chapters. There is very little plot; simply a story in which we meet a friend group who deals with loss, heartbreak, grief, love, and growth. Saenz’ use of symbolism really stands out, one of the most significant symbols being Salvador’s name. Although Sally is Caucasian, his mother gives him this strong Mexican name because he was her “salvation.” Sandy getting pregnant with him saved her from a life of drugs and abuse. Salvador starts out facing change. He has lived a comfortable life and has always been a “good boy.” At the start of his senior year he begins using his fists frequently and begins to question why and if this is something that he has inherited from his biological father. He becomes angry at himself for even thinking about this man because the man that he knows as his father is so great and loving. He then finds out that one of the people he loves the most is dying of cancer, his Mima. This leads Sally to begin questioning life, God, and why things happen the way that they do. He faces so many internal struggles and cannot figure out how to cope with them. After coming to terms with the letter from his dead mother, Salvador changes. Salvador transitions from this question filled “little boy” to a young man with the understanding that life is not logical. He says, “I finally understood something about life and its inexplicable logic. I wanted to be certain of everything, and life was never going to give me any certitude.” (440-441). He now has confidence in knowing who he is, where he belongs, and where he wants to go. His burning of the envelope containing his bio dad’s name was such a powerful
