It is Friday after school and four friends are going out to a smoke shop to grab some greek sandwiches. They do not care about the cigarettes that the shop sells, they just want some food before heading to practice at four o’clock. The four have a relationship, they could each spend the hour between school and practice on their own, but chose to spend their time together. In The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford, the main character Henry has many relationships with his father, son, and childhood friend. Without a positive past experience in father-son relationships, Henry does not know how to build a strong connection with his son Marty. He still feels love for Marty and wants the best for him. He says “I’m worried about Marty. I’ve always worried about him I guess I’d ask that you look out for him” (Ford 43). Marty also does not know how to have a relationship with his dad, causing the two to have a weak father and son dynamic. The lack of relationship with his own father led Henry to not forge a strong bond with his own son. Althouh he does not disown Marty, so Henry has an overall good relationship with his son. The lack of connection with his own father causes Henry to have problems connecting with his son Marty. Henry’s friendship with Keiko forms him into the husband he becomes for Ethel, and gives him the possibility of a new start with Keiko. Like the four friends going out for some sandwiches, Henry also has relationships. The four friends will have a lasting impact on each others’ lives similar to the impact that Keiko, Marty, and his father have on Henry.
