The short stories of Ted Chiang are written in a way such that the overarching structure help to give a deeper meaning to the stories. The rationale for why Chiang writes in this way is to help vary his writing style and help give the story more meaning without writing more words. Ted Chiang manipulates the structure of one of his works, “Story of Your Life,” for the purpose of augmenting the meaning the story and its underlying themes, while also using it to build a stronger relationship to the audience. In “Story of Your Life,” the way the Chiang breaks up the story is a result of mimicking the main character’s way of cognition. The fact that the story starts off with the end of the story leads makes the plot nonlinear and as a result, makes the audience feel how Louise feels after being able to see the future. This is a technique that has been widely used in films, and Chiang adopts this technique in order to enhance "Story of Your Life." According to Allan Cameron audience are more accustomed to “radically achronological narrative structures” as a result of “the relative popularity of films such as Pulp Fiction (Quentin Tarantino, 1994) and Memento (Christopher Nolan, 2000)” (65). Normally, a writer would use this in order to hide information from the audience; for example, in 21 Grams, which is a nonlinear movie, there are “three apparently disparate tales turn out [to] be inextricably linked” (Cameron 67). Chiang does not use the nonlinear structure for this reason; most notably Chiang reveals that Louise’s daughter died in the second break from the main plot (95). By having this nonlinear form, Chiang is asking the question of what is the relationship between time and the character, and this one of the larger themes of “Story of Your Life.” The relationship between time and humanity, this is a notable theme as it progresses without regards to humanity and begs the question of what is the future. Louise’s fate was tragic. But still I think that it’s better to live an hour of freedom and happiness than to spend an entire lifetime in the shadow of the “gray cloud”. Louise experienced real freedom that meant the absence of her husband’s domination. The irony of life killed her too early, but it seems to me that there is no need to feel pity for her. Even if it was a short hour, it was the time when all her dreams came true. She found the freedom from her husband that her lonely soul was searching for, and just for this we can consider her as a really happy woman.

In the story “Two Kinds”, the author, Amy Tan, intends to make reader think of the meaning behind the story. She doesn’t speak out as an analyzer to illustrate what is the real problem between her and her mother. Instead, she uses her own point of view as a narrator to state what she has experienced and what she feels in her mind all along the story. She has not judged what is right or wrong based on her opinion. One theme in this story is forbidden freedom. The freedom represents Louise’s independence that she receives from hearing about the death of her husband. Louise is only able to dream of that independence for a little time since in the end her husband turned out to be alive. Another theme is the oppression of her marriage. Even though Louise describes her husband as loving and caring she still feels joy after hearing he is dead. The motif of this story is weeping which is something Louise either does or thinks about doing throughout the story. She even imagines herself weeping over Mr. Mallard’s dead body. Once I entered high school I changed the way I thought. This is why I chose to go to college. I believe that college will give me the keys to unlock the doors of life. This way I can choose for myself where I go instead of someone choosing for me.
