As Proverbs 6:20 says “My son, keep your father's commandment, and forsake not your mother's teaching.” The book The Successful Family” written by Ellen G. White, it highlights certain principles, morals and values which are vital for the successful development of the family unit. The book is made up of sections designated to each member of the family, in which each person has different responsibilities which must be carried out in order for the unit to work, these sections also help us to understand each member of the family as unique individuals, who have various needs and feelings which should be respected. My reason for saying that it is, is despite how technologically advanced we become we still need guidance, and seeing the weakening of the family unit, we need as much guidance as possible on how to succeed. The book tackles some important topics such as How to make household chores agreeable, the orientation and protection of children, being kind but firm a, and also being the best example. From those topics parents learn how to successfully guide their children into becoming young people who will be good leaders of tomorrow’s world. The book also highlights how to make marriage work, and this is a problem in our society today for many individuals is they go into marriage not knowing what to expect and not willing to compromise to make it work. In the book Mrs. White highlights a few areas in which couples need to work in order for their relationship to be a successful one. This book helps us to develop Christ like values and morals in our families. It is often asked, if money a blessing or a curse. Well according to Ellen G. White, parents should teach their children that it is necessary to live in accordance with simple habits and avoid expensive items, because the best legacy a parent can teach his/her child is the knowledge of useful labor. The principles presented in the book are very realistic and attainable. Both Christians and non christians alike should strive to strengthen their family units spiritually, mentally, and emotionally and this book gives ways to do so. In building a stable family, this book is very useful, for it guides us on how to build a positive atmosphere within the home, so that the children can be positively influenced. “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree”, is a proverb which can be utilized, for what the children observe the parents partaking of in the home is what they too will do, so if a child is mistreated because of lack of provisions on the part of the parent, that child may grow up to mistreat his or her child, or even the parents when they get older. Finally, I would recommend this book because, no matter our positions in life, we all need guidance for we do not know everything.
