Sidhwa’s representation of characters in Cracking India serves as the embodiment of suffrage that Partition caused to the people of India. Through Lenny, the reader envisions each character having his/her own experiences and reactions to the post-colonization, which expands the focus of the affects from one group to multicultural groups of citizens. She explains that “when you put yourself into the persona of a child, in a way you remove all those blurred images-- other people 's opinions, expectations about what life is teaching you and the stereotypes which come in” (Sidhwa “Interview” 519). Lenny’s perspective shows the unveiling of biases and discrimination in her imagined community that she encounters and observes. After Ice-candy-man subtly reveals his jealously towards Masseur, Lenny comments “I become aware of the dusk that has gathered in shadows on the dung-plastered veranda and is thick behind the open door of Ayah’s quarters,” which foreshadows the demise of Ayah at the hands of Ice-candy-man (Sidhwa 134). Sidhwa uses the dusk and shadows to represent the turmoil and anguish Ayah will encounter and the open door symbolizing Ayah’s trust that will soon be violated by Ice-candy-man. When Lenny questions why the number thirteen is considered bad luck, Mrs. Pen responds by stating “…about Christ, the twelve apostles and about Judas’s betrayal and Christ’s crucifixion” (Sidhwa 142). Sidhwa uses this to show just as Judas betrayed Christ, Ice-candy-man betrayed Ayah. He turned his back on Ayah and by his actions put her in a devastating life altering situation.
