Sexual assault is a sensitive subject that was discussed in class through readings and viewing videos. In the movies The Hunting Ground and Audrie and Daisy they both depicted the difficulties of sexual abuse, but there was a misleading factor. In The Hunting Ground the film makes it seem like no action is ever taken for victims. I believe some police are doing their job helping victims get justice for the crimes committed. I understand some police can be corrupt and individuals will try to silence victims, however there are police and individuals who support victims. When I was 12 years old, I was sleeping on a coach bus with my family. I was awakened by a strange touch from my step grandfather that terrified me into a silent abyss. Which is not surprising because the topic is negative. My family rather not talk about rape because it gives a bad reputation just like the town gets an unsafe reputation. In addition, the Sheriff states,“ nothing that occured that night ever, ever rose to the level of the elements of the crime of rape.” The sheriff also tried making the case less impactful to protect the men involved and the town’s name. Despite these two people opinion’s the young men were sentnced to jail. In conclusion, some of the reading material and films make it seem that sexual assault victims never get the equity they deserve. The Hunting Ground leaves out statistics of colleges that do report against sexual assault. From my own experience a sexaul assult case from childhood was handled in less than a month. The police made sure I was not still affected by what happened and made sure he would not be allowed near my cousin or I.
