The novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey introduces Chief Broom, a half Indian character, and the events that occur to him inside of a mental hospital in the beginning of the novel. Chief Broom narrates the novel and describes every situation that occurs to him as well as the feelings that he evokes in chronological order. Broom’s fake act of remaining “dead and dumb” allows him to observe the actions and conversations of the workers (10). For instance, Chief Broom describes that the worker could “smell [his] fear” before actually taking him to shave his head which shows that the writing of the story occurs in order rather than jumping to different points in time. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest takes place in a mental institution in the Pacific Northwest. The narrator of the novel is Chief Bromden, also known as Chief Broom, a catatonic half-Indian man whom everybody thinks is deaf and dumb. He often suffers from hallucinations in which he feels that the room is filled with fog. The institution is dominated by Nurse Ratched (Big Nurse), a cold, precise woman with calculated gestures and a calm, mechanical manner. When the story begins, a new patient, Randall Patrick McMurphy, arrives at the ward. He is a self-professed 'gambling fool' who has just come from a work farm at Pendleton. He introduces himself to the other men on the ward, including Dale Harding, the president of the patient's council, and Billy Bibbit, a thirty-year old man who stutters and appears very young. Nurse Ratched immediately pegs McMurphy as a manipulator.

Individuals with the ability to elude conformity are able to set new standards and ditch the term impossible. In Ken Kesey’s novel “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” characters were subjected into conformity, however those that evade submission are able to realize their personal desires and as a result set a precedent for those that come after.
In Ken Kesey’s novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, the reader has the experience to understand what it was like to live in an insane asylum during the 1960’s. Kesey shows the reader the world within the asylum of Portland Oregon and all the relationships and social standings that happen within it. The three major characters’ groups, Nurse Ratched, the Black Boys, and McMurphy show how their level of power effects how they are treated in the asylum. Nurse Ratched is the head of the ward and controls everything that goes on in it, as she has the highest authority in the ward and sabotages the patients with her daily rules and rituals. These rituals include her servants, the Black Boys, doing anything she tells them to do with the patients.
Ken Kesey?s masterpiece novel One Flew over the Cuckoo?s Nest uses many themes, symbols, and imagery to illustrate the reality of the lives of a group of mental patients. The element of control is a central, arguably the largest, and the most important theme in the novel. The element of control revolves around the two main characters of the novel, Randle P. McMurphy, and Nurse Ratched. These two characters are the exact antithesis of each other, and they both seek to get their own way. They both realize that in order to get their own way, they must gain control over their rival and the ward. McMurphy and Nurse Ratched have different methods of attaining and using what control they have. They have different motives for seeking control over others. They also have different perceptions of the amount of control they possess. Throughout the novel, these two characters engulf themselves in an epic struggle for the most control. This struggle for control proves to be futile for both characters as they watch what control they thought had collapse like a house of cards. The element of control in Cuckoo?s Nest contains a certain definition. Control as it applies to the characters in Cuckoo?s Nest means that one character has substantial influence over the actions of another character. This control can influence another character?s attitudes, emotions, reactions, or even how they live their day-to-day life. The choice that a novelist makes in deciding the point of view for a novel is hardly a minor one. Few authors make the decision to use first person narration by secondary character as Ken Kesey does in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. By choosing Bromden as narrator instead of the central character of Randle Patrick McMurphy, Kesey gives us narration that is objective, that is to say from the outside of the central character, and also narration that is subjective and understandably unreliable. The paranoia and dementia that fill Bromden's narration set a tone for the struggle for liberation that is the theme of the story. It is also this choice of narrator that leads the reader to wonder at the conclusion whether the story was actually that of McMurphy or Bromden. Kesey's choice of narrative technique makes One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest a successful novel.

But Mr. Antolini thinks that Holden feels disconnected from his environment, and, his assessment is accurate. Holden wants to attempt to be his own saviour, but Mr. Antolini’s imagines Holden’s falling presents in a more accurate image of what awaits Holden on the other side of the “cliff.” This thus reveals the weaknesses of Holden’s romantic outlook.
In many ways, the world operates like a game. While the weak rely on chance and dumb luck to advance, the cunning will use strategy and manipulation to gain advantage. Nonetheless. not all games played are fair. As Adolf Hitler says, “there could be many players. If you don’t play with them, they’ll play with you”. At times, in order to ensure success, individuals tweak circumstances in their favor, thereby “rigging” the game. Though it may seem pointless to play at this point, forfeiting is beyond the most tactical decision; submission only enables others to continue to cheat, and only through playing their game and defying presumptions, can an individual beat corruption.
