Negocios focuses mainy on immigration. This story follows a man who leaves his wife and kids in the Dominican Republic moving first to Miami then to New York. The thoughts of him not concerned of his family back in DR made the story really unique, he marries a woman just to attain a United States citizenship from abandoning his wife and son.. He faced many struggles on his journey showing his strength of character. IT means a lot to be an immigrant, having to deal with racism and injustice, having long work shifts and not being paid as much. Livig in substandard conditions was also a big thing. Afterwards, in the 1990s films portraying Latinos would take a somehow new direction, one of the most famous filmmakers would be Gregory Navas, he directed the movie My Family/Mi Familia, a film that portrays the lives of a Mexican-American family and the difficulty that the couple faced in order to establish in the U.S. “by passing as immigrants and all the struggle to integrate their family in another country” (Peña Acuña, 2010). The film let the audience see a potential reality that most immigrants went through when they first moved to the United States and how the system worked differently and the way immigrants had to adapt not only to the system, but also to the language and culture.
All in all, Julio Cammarota was a great man, who was not afraid to question the law. He took a stand and wrote Sueños Americanos: Barrio Youth Negotiating Social and Cultural Identities, which was about how the Latina/o community delt with overwhelming racism and discrimination in California. Sueños Americanos not only gave a voice to the Latina/o community, but also encouraged more Latinas/os to go to school and get an education. A student should never be denied the right to learn and become successful because of a different skin color, or because they speak a different language. “No saco nada de la escuela” by Luis Valdez is a play that discusses the racism in schools. The play starts with students going to elementary school and then ascending to middle school and college. At the beginning the students were not aware of what racism really was because of their innocence. However, the teacher that they had was very racist and bullied the students of color. That experience made the other kids realize that not everyone was the same and because of color or language they should be treated differently. There are five different students who take part of this play, two of those students were white, and there were two Chicanos and one black. That is great diversity of cultures. The teacher that the students have in elementary school was an example of the other professors they were going to have throughout their school years. Very arrogant and not understanding of the minority students. Their teachers were not really interested in teaching the minorities and always showed her discontent of having students of color. Their teachers didn’t believe that students who were part of a minority should be placed in the same classroom as the white students. Maybe that was because they didn’t know the potential a minority student could have. One Chicano student named Francisco never denied his roots and became very successful. He had many obstacles in his learning environment, but at the end he becomes a great example of perseverance. Francisco is the student who I think showed the greatest development in the play. It’s about how her father was shot by a terrorist. Junot Diaz is a Dominican-American writer whose collection of short stories Drown tells the story of immigrant families in the urban community of New Jersey. His short story “Fiesta, 1980” focuses on Yunior, an adolescent boy from Dominican Republic and his relationship with his father. On the other hand, Piri Thomas was a great Latino writer from Puerto-Rico whose memoir Down These Mean Streets tells his life story as an adolescent residing in Harlem and the challenges he faces outside in the neighborhood and at home with his father. Roberto Obregon was a South American fine artist. His piece Sin Titulo, which directly translates to “untitled”, depicts a series of a hundred and ten black cutout shapes that seem to be deteriorating as their indicated numbers increase. He used fiberwood, rubber, adhesive, painted wood, and stamped ink to render his piece. The piece is said to be depicting rose petal, but it can be perceived as abstract, unlike Johanna Calle’s series that was being displayed within the same Latin American exhibit. In Junot Diaz’s essay “The Money” he explains where his family stands economically. Stating that his father was regularly being fired from his forklifting jobs and his mother 's only job was to care for him and his four siblings. With the money brought home by his father, his mom would save some. Her reason was to raise enough to send to her parents back in the Dominican Republic. When his family went on a vacation, they came back to an unpleasant surprise; their house had been broke into. Eventually Diaz was able to get back their money and belongings. Diaz returned the money to his mother although she didn’t thank him for it, this disappointed him. Like Diaz I have also encountered a similar situation where I was disappointed. When I was in second grade, my life life took a completely different turn. My dad took an unexpected trip to Guatemala, on his return, the outcome was not what I expected.
Bestseller journalist, Sonia Nazario, in her literacy non-fiction, Enrique’s Journey, describes a young man’s journey trying to reconcile with his mother in the United States, but has to go through many obstacles to reach her. Nazario’s purpose is to inform readers about how immigration affects children and their mothers in Central America. She adopts an optimistic/determined tone in order to reveal to her readers the difficulty and bravery the children have to face to get to the United States. Nazario begins her credibility with ethos to retrace an abandon teenager’s journey through Central America, pathos to follow the mother son relationship, and logos by giving facts and statistics for illegal immigrants in the U.S.
Shedding light on the three novels we construe that Cisneros, Naipaul and Morrison have perfectly dealt with the issue of identity crisis and alienation. Esperanza along with other characters, Mr. Biswas and Pecola all suffer from identity crisis because of their societies. They are rejected and ostracized not because they want to, but because people around them undergo an inferiority complex. Their crises originate from their childhood, and though they are different they share one common feeling. On the one hand we have Esperanza and Pecola who are both young girls (coming of age) and racially segregated; one a Chicana and the other is Afro-American. They both suffer from gender and racial division. However Pecola undergoes a “triple” alienation
Persuasion can be used in a good way as well as in a bad way. In the short story “How to Date a Brown Girl (Black Girl, White Girl, or Halfie)”, Junot Diaz presents the theme of stereotyping through the eyes of the narrator using persuasion to convince a him on how to get different girls. In the novel Persuasion, Jane Austen presents a question of social status and a difficulty of marriage by looking at Anne and her lover Wentworth’s values and beliefs. In both texts, the authors use persuasion to inform the reader of the lifestyles of the characters. In contrast, Diaz uses persuasion to command rather than depicting the character’s feelings and actions in Persuasion. The different obstacles described and compared by the persuasive pieces of literature such as race and social class help the audience to understand the characters’ actions and values.
