Lakme Fashion Week 2018 kicked off in grand style on January 31 in Mumbai’s ITC Grand Central Hotel. The opening day of the summer spring edition of the biggest fashion event in India belonged to Bollywood actor Shahid Kapoor and his gorgeous wife Mira Rajput. The lovely couple walked the ramp for Anita Dongre and in the process becoming the most talked about showstoppers of the day. The duo exchanged sweet nothings, indulged in cute PDA including the cliché dupatta getting stuck moments and of course Shahid making his lady love twirl – India’s biggest fashion show saw it all. However, once you are over the ‘aww-so-cute-couple’ factor, you realize how poorly the two walked the runway.

My counter question is – If they’re not, then why to take place of a deserving model who works extensively to gain the much-deserved recognition. Modelling is a serious business; the male and female models undergo strenuous training to be able to walk a ramp. However, all the rules are flouted with underserving Bollywood celebs and their relatives taking the position as showstoppers and doing a bad job at it.
You would not find Hollywood superstars Tom Cruise, Robert Downey Jr., Jennifer Lawrence or Nicole Kidman walk the ramp at Milan, New York, Paris or any other top fashion shows worldwide. There are models and supermodels for the job like Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid, Karlie Kloss, David Gandy, Matthew Noszka, Rob Evans, Adriana Lima, Candice Swanepoel, Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Irina Shayk, Emily Ratajkowski and so, so many more. The problem with this is that these unique designs are often inspired by different cultures. “There is still an issue of ignorance in our fashion world… I don’t even like to use the word racism — [they’re] ignorant. They just don’t want to budge. They just don’t want to change their ideas or be more open-minded, to just [book] a beautiful girl regardless of creed or color” (Campbell). Most of the time the new designs that are incorporated as the new trend of the year, are influenced by different cultures. Covert supports his claim by telling how, many big fashion industries did not hire women of color at all. Furthermore, he said that 82.7 percent of the models were white. Black models were hired for just 6 percent of the “looks” presented to the audience. Latina models made up just 2 percent. The Fashion Industry can be described as a glamorous world with cameras flashing, beautiful models strutting down the runway, in stunning and grand designs. What really goes on behind fashion’s dolled up doors is only an illusion compared to what reality is. Beautiful people, stylish clothing and timeless sophistication all make up the illusion of the glitz and glam of the fashion industry, but behind the curtains countless of models and designers constantly fall victim to this industry’s ever changing wrath. Fashion can be defined as a popular trend especially in styles of dress, ornaments or behavior. A model is a person who poses or displays for art purposes, fashion or other products and advertising. Fashion models are used mainly to promote products focusing mostly on clothing and accessory. The two main type of modeling in the fashion industry is commercial modeling and high fashion modeling. High Fashion models usually work for campaigns, designer’s collections and magazine editorials for high fashion designers. Runway modeling also known as “catwalk modeling” is displaying fashions and is generally performed by high fashion models. In my research paper, my main focus will be the multiple effects on high fashion models based upon the industry’s unregulated standards.

Paris was home to the first fashion house and it was the city to coin the terms of haute couture and prêt-à-porter. To this day use they implement high standards and use unions to protect these sects of the industry. It is home to the Golden Triangle; shopping districts of Champs-Elysées, Avenue Montaigne and Avenue Marceau. For these, and plenty of other reasons, France can still rightly claim its title of world fashion capital.

Fashion and film are art forms that have coexisted for decades, and although they are different, they also possess similar qualities. Pamela Church Gibson wrote in her book Film and Celebrity Culture that “film had a greater influence on fashion than any other form of visual culture” (Gibson 55). Fashion is an important part of film as it aids directors and writers in bringing characters and their personalities to life. Simultaneously, fashion has also benefited from films, as films are a popular source of inspiration for designers, who can be inspired by anything from storylines to characters. In an article, titled Film and Fashion: Just Friends, for the New York Times, Ruth La Ferla wrote that “wittingly or not, those viewers take in colors, subtle tactile impressions or an overall atmosphere that can linger in the mind for years, part of a vast store of images that may surface at any time” (La Ferla).

The lights, the camera's, the designer clothes, and the beautiful models, all of these are contributing pieces of a runway fashion show. But the models who are strutting down the runway, showing off high standard fashion clothes, are not the only models that are out there. There are many types of models that work in this line of business. There are commercial models, catalog models, plus size models, parts models, and so many more. All models have something in common though, they all live a challenging life. Although many believe that being famous, or on the cover of top rated magazines will make you happy and feel fulfilled, living that form of life can create a feeling of having no privacy. There are many perks however, in working as a model. For example, if working as a runway model, it is not unheard of to have a salary of five hundred dollars per hour. That high of a salary is mainly only given if it is a very large name show. Catalog models can receive one hundred dollars to two hundred or more. The amount of an hourly salary is dependent upon the popularity of the company or brand being modeled and if the model has a good reputation. The life of a model is very busy and includes a multitude of challenges that the model needs to be ready for.
