Mahmoud Darwich was one of the Palestinians who spent his life defending Palestinian problem through his political activism and his literary writings. Identity Card by Mahmoud Darwich, written in 1964, is a poem about Palestinians’ feelings and restrictions on expulsion. He’s expressing in this poem, the spirit of resistance of Palestinians in the face exile. It is extremely praised in Arabic poetry because it demonstrates emblems of the association between identity and land. Fadwa Touqan known as the “ Grande Dame” of Palestinian letters or the “Poet of Palestine” is one of the best contemporary poets. Identity card is a poem with a lot of repetitions and meaningful insistence where Darwich is showing off his struggle. The title is very well chosen and is related to the poem. He mentions it clearly in the first stanza, on the third verse “I am an Arab And my identity card number is fifty thousand”. This is Mahmoud’s way of explaining that having an identity card is a sign of existence. “I am in Arab” is a reminder to the rest of the Arab brotherhood countries that he needs help and that they are all human beings.
In I shall not weep by Fadwa Touqan, she’s comparing her city “ Yaffa” to a house. When she returns to her hometown, she realizes that it’s damaged. Although she was strong enough to stop cry. In Touqan’s point of view, crying won’t lead her anywhere and that comes back to the title “ I shall not weep”. Darwich had a huge positive impact on Fadwa, he encouraged her. In Diary of the Palestinian Wound, Darwich responds to Touqan and says “Sister, these twenty years our work was not to write poems but to be fighting” he is a part of her transformation. The common moral between the two poems is the insisting on the Palestinian resistance and stability of the arab Palestinian identity. Also to go all the way and not to give up on their country. Darwich feels more confident in his writings and that there is always hope in Palestine even though his country is damaged it only revives it.
