I represented Grendel as having half-human and half-monstrous form because he is part of Cain’s clan. In the Bible, the story of Abel and Cain where Cain kills his brother is well-known. If Grendel was a part of Cain’s clan, he would have had the evil spirit of Cain and therefore would have been murderous and cruel. Grendel was designed to be partially human and monster because I used my imagination to think of Grendel as a human just like Cain that has changed due to his evil spirit making him look and act like a monster. Just like Cain, Grendel is “among the banished monsters, Cain’s clan/ whom the creator had outlawed/ And condemned as outcasts”. For the reason that he fought with five beasts, he would have had strength more than normal men resulting in big muscles all from fighting the five big monsters. I also intentionally gave him long legs since he slaughtered sea-brutes, in which it would have involved some swimming skills that would be really tiring for someone who does not have the legs to support them. So, Beowulf has lengthy and muscular legs built firm by the amount of battles he had to fight. Pitifully, in the story, the poet does not describe the physical features such as the hair color of Beowulf, the shape of his nose, the existence of his beard and moustache, which are the features I tried to include. Based on the story, Beowulf is “The Geat leader”, in which the Geats are from what is now modern day Sweden. I imagined Beowulf as a Viking, and I gave him a dirty blond hair because it is the middle color of blond and brown, which were the two common hair colors of the Vikings. The shape of the nose of Beowulf was drawn facing downwards, as I was drawing him to aim to get rid of Grendel’s arm. I focused the whole entire tension on Grendel’s arm joint where his arm would be disconnected if pulled hard at.
