I will first begin by summarizing the plot of Family by Pa Chin and the plot of Some Prefer Nettles by Junichiro Tanizaki and summarizing the characters as I go along. I will then explain how the two authors constructed their characters on modernity and tradition and conclude this paper by explaining the themes of the novels and how I would compare the two novels.

The plot of this novel is set in the city of Chengdu in the providence of Sichuan, located in central China. The book itself was written in 1931 and by this time, the Chinese communist party was well established and fighting battles with the Japanese and Chiang Kai-shek and spreading influence in south and central China. (Chin, 1931) This story is about the rich, aristocratic Kao Family, who live in the city of Chengdu, Sichuan. The story has some very interesting characters but for the most part, mainly focuses on the three brothers and their very interesting and downright depressing lives.
Chueh-hsin is the oldest brother and the most obedient and traditional brother. He is a strong believer of filial piety and even sacrifices marrying the woman he loves (his cousin Mei) and throws away getting an education in science in order to do as his grandfather wishes. His grandfather arranges a marriage to a young woman named Jui-cheuh and takes a job that his grandfather got him in town in order to honor tradition. The next brother is Chueh-min who we could describe as a radical. He is the middle brother of the three. He also falls in love with his cousin named Chin and runs away in order to defy his grandfather because he doesn’t want to be miserable like his older brother and narrowly escapes an arranged marriage...

...morality and courage. (Gale, www.bookrags.com/Family, 2014)
The reason why I argue courage is because the youngest brother leaves his family to start a new life and that requires courage. He also is too rebellious to be like his older brother. Immorality is a given theme in this book. The mistreatment of servants and the 66th birthday party that was overtly sexual, concubines argue that their society is full of lewdness and that they lack any morals. An interesting observation is that all of the women they love are pure and virtuous and 2 of them die horribly which goes to show how immoral the author viewed his society. Another point to be argued is that inequality is also a common theme of this novel. The author describes this by the treatment of the young women and how they are treated and unable to have a normal education. (Gale, www.bookrags.com/Family, 2014)

A maternal bond is a very crucial component of one’s life; therefore by disrupting the usual aspect of one’s life, the authors are sending their message in a strong manner. Furthermore, the ending of both novels imply a necessity for social improvement in their societies as the protagonists have to detach themselves from their repressive mothers, who represent the authorities of the old generation with their overbearing attitudes, in order to pursue their own dreams, whether it is for education, career, or love. After the protagonists break away from their mothers, Tita chases her love for Pedro and Hang leaves the country, abandoning all the traditional traditions, to continue with her college education and occupation in Russia.

Courage is a praised characteristic in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Many characters embody the true meaning of courage, although different aspects of courage are illustrated throughout the course of the novel. Mrs. Henry Lafayette Dubose, an elderly ill-tempered woman, shows admirable determination by kicking her morphine addiction on her deathbed. Atticus Finch, a lawyer in a Southern town plagued by racism, defends a colored man in the South without submitting to social pressures. A reclusive, yet benevolent Boo Radley confronts his fear of the outside world and leaves his home in order to save the lives of two children from a murderous drunk. Scout and Jem’s interpretation of courage continues to change through the course of their experiences, and they begin to understand the perspectives of those who demonstrate courage. By adhering to strong moral convictions, and demonstrating incredible willpower and determination, each of these characters proves to be courageous in his or her own right.

The three main characters are Ooka, Hambie, and the boy. The story starts off with Ooka in confusion because of what he finds knocking at his door, a crying boy holding a dog. In an act of kindness Ooka makes it his mission to find out why the boy is crying and what he can do to bring justice to the sorrowful boy. It isn't long until Ooka comes upon the boys father and their neighbor Hambei. Ooka soon finds out that the boy's dog has bitten Hambei's new kimono and that Hambei seeks to have the dog destroyed because of it. Everyday as Hambei is walking he kicks the dog out of his way. Hambei tells Ooka of a time that the boy bumped into him so he kicked him out of the way as a form of disicpline.
