Virmati’s character is so full of dilemmas and strange emotions that any modern women would identify with her, if trapped in similar circumstances. Virmati’s fight against her
Family traditions; against the age-old orthodox syndromes fixated with sub-continent women and against the society that so naturally expect her to follow the path of a sacrificing “ideal women.” And along with this, a similar plot progresses in the backdrop, that of India’s struggle The novel shows the internal conflicts in India between groups, whilst showing a conflict between past and present.
Their is a attachment of Viramati towards her youngest sister, fear of bringing shame to family and longing for Professor’s company. All these emotions exhaust her to the core.
Even the Professor’s character, although a bit selfish, is very human. Frustrated from his wife’s
Illiteracy and open disinterest in his western ways, he finds a comforting partner and an enthusiastic student in Virmati.The only thing probably missing from the plot is a bit of humor element that was much desired for. In Inheritence of Loss the story moves at a constant pace and similar serious tone that makes it predictable at times. The major theme running throughout is one closely related to colonialism and the effects of Post Colonilism: the loss of identity and the way it travels through generations as a sense of loss. Individuals within the text show snobbery at those who embody the Indian way of life and vice versa, with

Gender, the world of Viramati is full of love, affection, selfless devotion and all that is soft and
Sweet and noble in human nature. Between a mother and a child, trust and love exist. At times
Virmati yearned for affection, for some sign that was special. However, when she put her head next to the youngest baby, feeding in the mother’s arms, Kasturi would get irritated and push her away. And Nimi(one of the character from The Inheritance of Loss) only presented as minor figures in the novels, just like she is the minor or “subaltern” in her life. Nimi is mostly seen in relation to Jemubhai – her fate is described in a few pages. And she is from different country with different cultural and religious background. Nimi is seriously oppressed by her husband.
Jemubhai’s systematic abuse of her starts as soon as he is back from England. In
