Have you ever fallen in love with the wrong person? How about falling in love with your family’s worst enemy? This tragedy happened to Romeo and Juliet, two adolescents that were doomed to unhappiness since the moment they were born. Two powerful and respectable families that have had hatred for each other for so long that the reason for how their hatred began is forgotten. Romeo and Juliet were the ones who had to pay the consequences for their families’ feud. Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet adaptation is both faithful and unfaithful to mise-en-scène in the beginning, middle, and end of the scene.
The mise-en-scène in this scene suggests Luhrmann’s both faithfulness and unfaithfulness to Shakespeare’s play. In the beginning of the scene, it starts off with a group of women and men in swimwear and fashion accessories which suggests that they are going to the beach and they are content. However, in Shakespeare’s play the scene opens directly with Benvolio and Mercutio’s dialogue regarding Romeo. Also the women and men’s performance in the beginning of the scene is of laughing, smiling, dancing which suggests they are having a good time and maybe even celebrating. The costuming in the beginning of the scene were unfaithful to the text. However, the prop presented in the film could relate to one of the themes in the play; Impulsiveness of Youth, making it faithful to the text. The middle of scene was completely faithful to the text when talking about costuming, performance, and lighting. The end of the scene was both unfaithful and faithful to the text.
