June 12, 2016 Have you ever felt a prisoner in your own home? The poem, Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers by Adrienne Rich is presented to English 105 students for their analysis and interpretation. The poem is about a woman who is a victim of oppression and control by her husband and she expresses her injustice and feelings through her artwork. Rich uses symbolism in this poem to address the issue of domestic violence in the home and shines light on the less known form of abuse against women which is control and isolation by their husbands.
The two main character images are Aunt Jennifer and a tiger. The strong and brave tiger is in direct contrast with the weak and timid aunt. The tiger is described
“The massive weight of Uncle’s wedding band” depicts that her marriage is not happy and equal, but instead oppressive and negative. “Sits heavily upon Aunt Jennifer’s hand” represents the ring as her prison shackles that chain her to her husband as property. Her husband is her warden, watching her at all times. In the book, “Why Does He Do That?” by Lundy Bancroft, the husband’s abusive attitude toward women is described as, “You are a thing that belongs to me, akin to a trophy. Females and femininity are inferior and women are here to serve men and I’m going to watch you like a hawk to keep you from developing strength or independence.” This general attitude of the male abuser hangs over the marriage and the wife lives with it every day. These statements give insight to the characteristics common among women in these situations. The Domestic Violence Information Hidden Hurt, lists these characteristics as, “low self-esteem, emotional and economical dependency, depression, socially isolated, poor self-image, believes stereotypical gender roles, appears nervous and anxious.” These attitudes of abusers and characteristics of victims support Adrienne Rich’s depiction of an emotional abused wife and the invisible “bruises” she wears. It also gives insight to the woman’s feelings of hopelessness and despair in the marriage. The general attitude of society is to not interfere with another man’s marriage because it’s not their business to do
