It is recommend that Iago be diagnosed with Antisocial Personality Disorder because he exhibits deceitfulness, a lack of remorse, and exploitation and mistrust of sexual partners.

The first symptom that Iago exhibits is deceitfulness. Iago spends the entirety of his time during the course of the play manipulation others and indulging in deceitful behaviors. Iago’s actions are constantly manipulative, self serving, and often proving harmful to others. The DSM 5 describes this trait as “indicated by repeated lying, use of aliases, or conning others for personal profit or gain”. In Othello, Iago has a wife, Emilia, who constantly faces mistreatment from her husband. Through a lack of trust and verbal and sometimes physical abuse, Iago is clearly a poor husband. Iago falls in line with the Mayo Clinics descriptions of those afflicted with Antisocial personality disorder. The Mayo Clinic says, “Because of these characteristics, people with this disorder typically can't fulfill responsibilities related to family, work or school”. “In Othello, the audience sees Iago exhibit this trait time and time again. “But partly led to diet my revenge for that I suspect the lusty Moor hath leaped into my seat” (2.1). In this line, Iago tells Roderigo that he believes Othello is having an affair with his wife, Emilia. However, Iago believes this for no justified reason, he just assumes that he cannot trust his wife. The DSM 5 describes people with this disorder as “irresponsible and exploitative in their sexual relationships”. While this mistrust is partially a product of the time, it also exposes Iago's third symptom, mistrust of a partner. The mayo clinic describes an effect of sociopathy as “Because of these characteristics, people with this disorder typically can't fulfill responsibilities related to family, work or school”. Iago is seen to have a hard time maintaining his relationship with his wife Emilia. She is always seen as the most depressed character and has a set of beliefs that all men are evil.
