A Woman’s Struggle to Be
“I Stand Here Ironing”, is a short story, written by Tillie Olsen in which the author is able to engage the reader to the plight of a mother who is suffering from depression. It is through the mother’s narration of the story that the reader is pulled into the life of a middle aged woman during the late 1930’s and early 1940’s. The first-person narrative technique permits the development of a very personal interior monologue and the examination of an entire lifetime of events. These reveal the development of the child, Emily, and her relationship to her mother in a way that exposes the mother’s anguish and sadness. From a feminist lens, I have examined I Stand Here Ironing from two distinct scholarly areas. The first being the gender role playing the advantages and disadvantages which are afforded to each sex. The second having explored the economic impact on parents, primarily the mother child relationship, and the effect is has on the family dynamics and emotional develop of children who live in economically stressed environments. The third and final area which will be explored will anchor the review of Comparative Teaching of Literature
The entire story- I Stand Here Ironing can be viewed as a metaphor for motherhood. How in general and in specific terms motherhood effects the children and their relationship with their mother, but the relationship each individual has with themselves and the other members of the family unit. The narrative of this story is completely feminine based. It is through the mother’s perspective that the reader is able to experience everything.
