"I've learned you shouldn't go through life with a catcher's mitt on both hands; you need to be able to throw something back." Maya Angelou said this quote, and it has many different interpretations, but it depends on how you look at it. In my case, I believe that it explains how you shouldn't just take offers that people throw at you. Whether it's a job or maybe an opportunity, you need to not just take it without considering other options. Maybe there will be something better if you just wait a bit longer, but if you take that job, you won't be able to make a better decision. You need to shape the life you have with the options you choose, if you pick the wrong choice, it could end up being much worse then it would be if you had chosen

One of the best explanations of courage is the following by Maya Angelou: “One isn’t necessarily born with courage, but one is born with potential. Without courage, we cannot practice any other virtues with consistency. We can’t be kind, true, merciful, generous, or honest.” Her explanation summarizes all that courage can lead you to who you are in life. Courage is standing up for what you believe in, despite disapproval, pain, fear, uncertainty, or intimidation. Courage is challenging what is normal. Courage is giving voice to those who cannot speak for themselves. Courage is using whatever power available to educate the world about injustice. Courage is following your heart even when the path is not known. Courage is trying after failing.
“On the Pulse of Morning” by Maya Angelou. "On the Pulse of Morning," is a poem written by Maya Angelou. In this poem, Angelou depicts personification. Personification is an element of literature in which an object or animal is given human characteristics. Angelou uses personification to give the rock, the river, and the tree the ability to speak to the reader. In "On the Pulse of Morning", Angelou writes, "But today, the rock cries out to us, clearly, forcefully, Come, you may stand upon my back and face your distant destiny, but seek no haven in my shadow.
The quote itself can be translated into, an everyday person does not want to be happy and ambition. That person will settle with what will keep them alive. I agree with this quote for a few reasons. To begin, the people in today’s
Throughout life we go through many stepping stones, Maya Angelou's autobiographical essay "Graduation", was about more than just moving on to another grade. The unexpected events that occurred during the ceremony enabled her to graduate from the views of a child to the more experienced and sometimes disenchanting views of an adult. Upon reading the story there is an initial feeling of excitement and hope which was quickly tarnished with the abrupt awareness of human prejudices. The author vividly illustrates a rainbow of significant mood changes she undergoes throughout the story.
“Whether or not I deliberate about what to do, it is sometimes up to me what I do.”
Maya Angelou lived through a time where she was discriminated against for not only her race but also her gender. In her poem “Still I Rise” Angelou sarcastically talks about how no matter what is thrown at her she will rise above it and she will do it with resilience and confidence. Her poem discusses racism and sexism and gives minorities and women a sense of hope to overcome and endure both of those things. Angelou’s self-assurance in the poem makes you believe that you too can overcome whatever obstacle. Although this poem was intended for blacks, and women, and specifically black women, the poem helps build up strong and courageous people no matter what race or gender you are. Maya Angelou in “Still I Rise” uses both pathos and ethos to
“On the pulse of morning” describes the challenges facing American people through personification. The tree, river and rock have become symbols for peace, security, wisdom, humanity and freedom available to all people of every background and circumstance. People have been using hurtful and damaging words and language for far too long, though they were created for greater realities. “Have lain too long face down in ignorance. Your mouths spilling words armed for slaughter.” (Angelou) Return to a wisdom before you believed people were motivated by self-interest. “Before cynicism was a bloody sear across your brow and when you yet knew you still knew nothing.” (Angelou)

As I was reading through the story “Champion of the World” by Maya Angelou (written in 1959) I noticed that the author uses many different techniques like sentence structure, pathos, and logos to show and tell what she supports.
The early 1930’s a time where segregation was still an issue in the United States it was especially hard for a young African American girl who is trying to grow and become an independent woman. At this time, many young girls like Maya Angelou grew up wishing they were a white woman with blond hair and blue eyes. That was just the start of Angelou's problems though. In the autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Maya Angelou goes into great depth about her tragic childhood, from moving around to different houses, and running away and having a child at the age of 16. This shows how Maya overcame many struggles as a young girl.
This means exactly what is said, you can discover things about yourself when you are put into situations you can’t control. This quote is important because it tells you a good life lesson.
I chose this quote because it is so germane to life. I think that this quote is pretty lucid; however, to me it means to never make the same mistake twice. Mistakes are all part of learning and becoming a better you. You can always improve until the day you aren't here on this earth anymore. Nothing is wrong with mistakes, unless you continue to make the same ones over
