In the poem “The Kiss” by Stephen Dunn the gentleman touches base with the subject of love and the first kiss that makes an incentive. The gentleman shares his love for the nurturing woman in his life. He speaks about her actions and complements her throughout the whole play. Through the use of repetition, imagery, and allusion the speaker sets a romantic tone about the events that followed their first kiss. The speaker asserts that true love is having a connection with each other on a deep level. A level so deep it makes the ocean jealous. True love is thinking about one another constantly, having passion with each other, and being there for your partner to consult and pleasure them.
The speaker begins the poem by saying that she kissed him on the lips. The speaker then uses imagery to describe the passionate kiss they shared. The speaker paints a picture of love chemicals surrounding the guy and the woman when they share their first kiss. It is evident that the moment is special and one-of-a-kind when he says “Pheromones, newly born, were floating / between us. There was hardly any air” (5-6). Pheromones are chemicals that influence the development of the same species. If you could imagine those chemicals around a couple when they share a kiss it is pretty special. The kiss is more than a kiss in this situation. The kiss is not an action but an event. Nowadays a kiss is nothing more than a kiss but in this poem the speaker is jubilant about his first kiss. Dunn successfully conveys his message of what true love really is by using literary devices such as repetition, allusion, and imagery. Dunn uses these devices to add detail and finesse the events that happen in the play. He expresses his idea of what true love really is which is when a couple shares an intimate connection with each other, have passion in their life, and are there for each other to complement each other. Dunn uses a romantic tone to help give us the meaning of what true love is.

Love is present everywhere, in every form, in every condition and even when one least expects it.
Love plays an important role in most physical and emotional relationships. Love is a word that can prove difficult to define or even compare to other emotions. This is due to the diversity of meaning and the complexity of the emotion itself. Everyone has been in love at least once before and has gotten a taste of all the good and bad things that come with it. Christina Rossetti’s “Song” presents some of the good parts of love while Philip Larkin’s “Talking in Bed” shows us some of the bad parts of love. Larkin’s poem presents a failing relationship where communication has failed between a couple and things are getting more and more difficult. Rossetti’s poem presents a wholly different view on love; it is told from the viewpoint of someone talking to his or her lover about what said lover should do after the speaker dies. The love between them seems better, more powerful and good. The two poems also present wholly different attitudes towards “The End,” whether that is the end of life or the end of the relationship. Larkin presents the end as something dark and sad, difficult to cope with. Rossetti, on the other hand, talks about the end as just another beginning, a chance to start over in a new world. Finally, the two poems represent remembrance in different ways. Larkin’s presents memory as something extremely important while Rossetti implies that it does not matter whether we remember or not.

Love cannot be defined in one sentence or even a paragraph. Every human has his or her own definition of love because people usually define love based on their cultures, backgrounds, social classes, educations, and their societies. In this essay, the main point will be the different kinds of love that Carver illustrates in his story “What We Talk about When We Talk about Love.” In Carver’s story, there are some points that I can relate to my personal experience. There are a few characteristics and symbols in the story that are really important to understand in order to define what a real love is and find the intention thrown out the story. These characteristics includes, Mel, Terri and Ed and Terri’s relationship. Furthermore, symbols such as ”sunlight” and “dark room”,” cardiologist” and “silence” at the end of the story can have a specific intention thrown out of the story.

Both false love and true love prevail in the end, leading the reader to come to the conclusion that all types of love can triumph. Hermia and Lysander represent the existence of a "true love", while Helena and Demertrius represent the opposite extreme. Shakespeare presents the idea that love is unpredictable and can cause great confusion. Love is something that cannot be explained, it can only be experienced. Shakespeare challenges us to develop our own idea of what love truly is.
Love can be false or a lie, but if it is beautiful love, then it is also true. The poet enhances readers understanding of the values beauty and truth by illustrating in his poem how truth can be found through beauty. When the speaker in the poem talks about how he wishes love were like rain, he is exemplifying truth. Typically truth is something that is logical and that can be proven, but in this case truth is not something that is logical. Love is not logical, but it is still true. As stated earlier, truth can be found through beauty. In other words, for something to be undeniably beautiful then it has to be true. Love cannot be proven because it is a feeling and emotion. However, love can be felt, so therefore love is true. Things humans feel are true. It cannot be proven that someone can feel it but if that is what a person senses to be true then it is so. The pragmatic truth test supports these claims that love is true because the speaker of the poem believes his love to be true. Laura and Nick are almost positive that they know what the true meaning of love is. They do not specifically define love, however, they express it through holding hands and smiling at each other. Each couple has their own reasons to believe that they have loved, yet they cannot clearly express why. The dialogue that occurs between Laura, Nick, Mel and Terri reveal a lot about their perception on love. For example, the way the characters interact with each other not only helps the reader to understand the author’s purpose of the essay, but also suggests that there be a relation between the story and intellectual, spiritual, and sensual love.

The relationship can be between a mother and a child, a man and a woman, or of one person reaching out to their love. No matter what kind of relationship there is, the bond between the two people is shown through literary devices to enhance the romantic impression upon the reader. Through Dudley Randall’s “Ballad of Birmingham,” Ben Jonson’s “To Celia,” and William Shakespeare’s “Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer’s Day?” relationships are viewed as a powerful bond, an everlasting love, and even a romantic hymn.
