Often people look towards old people as people who are dull, and not full of life. They don’t understand anything of the times. They pinch cheeks. They always tell boring stories. These are many things people stereotype the older generation as being. Yet, this is not true at all. Older people need to be highly respected. They have lived such long lives and gone through so much. They give so much insight on how people should live their lives as clearly they have endured through it. In the short story of A Celebration of Grandfathers by Rudolfo A. Anaya, it suggests important life lessons that everyone needs to know.
To begin, in A Celebration of Grandfathers, the first insight the Grandfathers tell us is to know where you stand. It is told that the narrator’s grandfather spoke in short phrases and to the point. In “Abuelito Who”, the grandfather is deeply loved, but old and described as “sick” and as “dough and feathers,” inferring his age. The poem is told through the perspective of the grandfather’s grandchild, who cares for him, saying certain things remind them of him after he didn’t “live here anymore” by stating that their grandfather “is blankets and spoons and big brown shoes.” Like the grandfather in “Abuelito Who”, the grandfather in “The Old Grandfather” is old and it is stated that his legs “would not carry him” and his eyes “could not see”, which affected his family’s feelings towards him. The grandfather’s old age was viewed as a weakness, and he was not treated as an equal by his family, such as not being able to sit with them at the table for dinner. The grandson in this story seems to be very reflective of his parents, who treat the grandfather poorly, hence he is seen making a dish for his parents. The themes of these stories can arguably be considered somewhat similar to the ways they are used; In “Abuelito Who”, the theme is to cherish things while they last because you will never know when they could be gone. This theme shows when it becomes quite clear that something has happened to the speaker’s grandfather and he suddenly “doesn’t live here anymore”. Next time you think about avoiding your grandparents, read the folk tales “The Old Grandfather and the Little Grandson” and “The Wise Old Woman.” In both folk tales, the theme the authors portray is to treat your elders with respect. The authors of “The Old Grandfather” and “The Wise Old Woman” develop the theme to respect your elders through the characters, the setting, and the symbolism.
Aging is universal and it is a process that everyone has to go through. The only difference is that everyone goes through this process at their own pace influenced by factors that will be discussed later on in this paper. When we think about factors that have an influence on older adults and how their life may be affected, we must consider the different social institutions while analyzing influences from social factors, cultural factors, and personal values. The article I chose for this assignment included two passages from the book, The Gift of Years, by Joan D. Chittister (1936). Chittister wrote this book when she was 81 years old and it is a particularly poignant read because the book provides a realistic and an optimistic view about how we grow old.
This reflection paper is based on the life history interview conducted on me and a 78-year-old woman who is soon going to celebrate her 79th birthday on Sep 21st. I would call her with a fictitious name “Smita” in the entire paper to maintain and protect her privacy. The interview was about our life. It was divided into six major life categories: childhood, adulthood, identity, the present, aging, and life lessons. Having an opportunity to interview a 78-year-old woman and writing this reflective paper about the life history and experiences had made me realize that I have a lot to learn about the stages of human life. Every individual lives are different and it varies tremendously. As an interviewee my goal was to collect the details of life, different stories, and experiences that makes our life unique from the rest of the people.

Hello, I’m Tala Ashour and I am going to be giving a tribute speech to my role model. How many of you would like to go back in time just to be able to meet a wonderful person you’ve never got the chance to meet? A wise woman who is known as Shannon Alder once said; “Carve your name on hearts, not tombstones. A legacy is etched into the minds of others and the stories they share about you.” I would go back in time to meet the most admirable person in my life which is my grandfather because I fell in love with him but never met him. My deceased grandfather was a caring, genuine and humble human being that wanted nothing but a happy, comfortable and acceptable life.
All living things age, it is an unavoidable process. It is associated with cognitive, emotional, and physical transformation (Sarma & Bhagawati, 2015). According to Sarma & Bhagawati (2015), there is an increase in the population of older adults worldwide. Very often they feel isolated and neglected from their own family and friends. As people get older they become more forgetful, many have dementia that made them loose their ability to comprehend the world around them. They live in their own reality and remembering the past may help boost their life satisfaction and decrease depression. Elderly tell the stories to younger generations, it is a tradition that has been around for a long time. By storytelling, older adults are able to connect to younger generations, and it helps the younger ones to understand the person that now cannot remember their own children. Reminiscence is remembering the past and bringing old memories back to life (Lindinger-Sternart, 2013).
In life many of us experience what it is like to be hurt by those we hold dear. As a young girl I saw this first hand that generally the people we hold the closest actually end up being the people that hurt us the most. You expect more from them and their actions affect you on a deeper level the people you hold to a different standard from your loved ones. It’s hard to imagine all the events that led up to ourselves coming into the world or at least it is hard to some people. When I think about all my ancestors that had to survive all the things I read about in textbooks it’s a miracle we are all here. Trying to learn about all the people in my family’s tree was interesting to know how my ancestors came about, what they did, and how long they lived. I learned mostly about my mother’s side of the family who have lived and flourished in andrews, texas where I am from. I haven’t done anything great yet but I am hoping when my grandchildren have to write about me they have something awesome to write about and will think I did something good with my life.
