In fifth grade my family moved to Huntsville, Alabama where I met my best friend Mary. To this day, even though we live far apart, we still remain close friends. Mary is an avid singer, she discovered her talent at the young age of eight years old. I decided to interview Mary to learn more about her fascinating journey singing. I started off asking Mary when she learned that she was capable of singing. I figured that for any artist, the moment they discovered their talent, is monumental. Even though Mary started singing when she was eight, she kept her talent from the world until she took her first choir class in middle school. Her fondest memories singing are when she won a solo competition and when she played as little red riding hood. Mary has a wide variety of interests, her favorite genre's of music are Country and Pop. If your lucky enough to hear her sing, she'll most likely be harmonizing to Kelly Clarkson, her favorite artist, or singing her favorite song, Strawberry Wine. When asked what her goals where, she replied that she wishes to continue competing, she loves showcasing her talent and hopes to one day achieve fame. In my opinion, if anyone has the will and determination to make their dreams become a reality it would be Mary. Her family has no musical background, so her skills are truly a gift. She had a rough upbringing, instead of succumbing to the darkness, she used singing as her outlet. Ella was discovered in 1934. It was a dare for her, from her friends, to go and perform in the Amateur Performance Night in the Harlem Apollo (“10 Interesting Ella Fitzgerald Facts”). That night, Ella was going to dance in the competition. Instead, she saw how the people who performed before her perfectly and decided to sing her favorite song called “The Object of My Affection”. Personally one of my favorite artists of all time, Billie Holiday, is known to be a true artist known in American pop and jazz history. She lived an emotional and challenging life, with plenty of stories to tell and enough sorrow to fill a songbook. Holiday sang with incredible profundity, sophistication, and her unique vocals is still considered to be one of the greatest jazz voices of all time.

Many people across the world are affected every day by the gift of music. To those of us who let it into our lives, we truly view it for what it is. Unfortunately, not everyone realizes how powerful it can be. For me singing was something that I was always good at; I never really took it to heart. I never understood when people would talk about how music had changed there lives; I just didn't see how a few notes put together could affect anyone so deeply. It wasn't until last April when our choir was chosen among a select few to perform at Carnegie Hall that I would understand the indubitable impact of music.

Dolly has surpassed any rags to riches story that ever lived. She has touched the lives of so many individuals over many decades through her many talents. Marian Anderson was born on February 27, 1897 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. With Marian’s mother being a former schoolteacher and her father a coal and ice delivery man for the city, the Anderson family was not considered “well-off”. Marian, the oldest of three girls, often competed for attention with her also musically talented sisters. Marian easily won the heart of her father who supported her throughout all of her musical endeavors. Marian joined her church choir at the age of six; in support, her father bought her piano at age eight. His death, when Marian was only twelve years old, left Marian’s mother to bring up three young girls by herself. This event only pushed Marian to practice and perfect her singing talents (Bio).
