How one’s culture affects the way we view the world and others are in many different ways, for example Heritage, Family structure, Symbolism, and Judgment are just a few out of many ways culture affect our point of view of the world and others. Furthermore what culture is, is a huge mix of parts that make up someone and who they are. In the Novel “ Two Kinds,” from The Joy Luck Club, by Hayden Herrera, the Short Story “ Everyday Use,” by Alice Walker, the Personal Essay “ Two Ways to Belong in America,” by Bharati Mukherjee, and in the Essay “An Indian Father’s Plea,” by Robert Lake conveys how this is true. Furthermore, another example of heritage is the essay An Indian Father’s Plea, by Robert Lake, which is mainly about an Indian father who wrote a letter to a teacher who labeled his son Wind-Wolf a “ slow learner,” and talks about how their culture is different than U.S. culture and why Wind-Wolf does the actions he does inside of the class, while also explaining why he acts differently than the rest his peers. For example, Robert Lake states “ At the age of 5, he has already been through quite an education compared with his peers in Western society. As his first introduction into this world, he was bonded to his mother and to the Mother Earth in a traditional native childbirth ceremony. And he has been continuously cared for by his mother, father, sisters, cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents, and extended tribal family since this ceremony,” ( paragraph 2). In "two ways to belong in America by Bharati Mukherjee, she says " we would endure are two years in America, secured are degrees, then return to India and to marry the groom's of our fathers choosing." This quote represents family structure because it shows how they are supposed to be . The girls have a strict way of living that many, if not most families and their culture follow in this culture they have their fathers choose who they will marry. This is called an assigned marriage. In my family, we do not have assigned marriage, but I have distant relatives that do participate in this tradition. In the short story "Everyday Use" by Alice Walker there is a quote in which I can relate to very much so. "Maggie can't appreciate these quilts...." I have been in this position before where someone doesn't understand their heritage nor do they give it any value. There is a knitted blanket which has been passed down through generations in my family and this blanket has been part of my culture, and is very significant to my family because it has memories of everyone's childhood. When a baby is born in our family the blanket is is gifted to the newborn by the person who had the blanket previously, because of this we are able to remember our culture, heritage and understand why it is important to us.
