Silver age comics were steeped in the conservative nature of the 50s, even the edgier Marvel comics fell into this trap and Dr. Strange is no exception. Stan Lee’s Dr. Strange, though he wears a cape, is no golden age superman. Instead, he is a conservative man who answers to a greater vow to aid all humanity regardless of the cost to himself, who just happens to get along with local law enforcement. Police are not often seen in the Dr. Strange comics, but when they are, they are not portrayed as bumbling, crooked, or heavy handed men who are more a part of the problem than the solution. Instead, they are portrayed as honorable men who try all they can to help the people they serve. In issue 116 when people start falling asleep and never waking up the police come to Dr. Strange saying they have done everything they could. After examining the victims and the charts Dr. Strange confirms this saying “Hmmm, I see by this chart you have tried every means available to science! there can only be one answer” (116 3)” to prove that the police have done everything they within their power to save the people in question. The police are also present at key moments, as they are in issue 119 when two criminals need to turn themselves in the police are right there willing and able to handle the situation (119 8). The police do not often interfere with Strange due to his dealings with matters outside of the realms of standard reality, but when they do interact it is civilly and with an era of mutual respect for one another’s work. Furthermore Strange does not go against the law as golden age batman does, he instead worked with it, openly assisting the police in the two above occasions.
