Bernina Express: Fall in love with a train ride. Who doesn’t love a train ride? It offers a unique experience that no other vehicle can match. In a previous issue, we covered the Trans-Siberian Railway. In this article, we will be going on a journey aboard the Bernina Express, beginning our journey from Chur in Switzerland, traveling through wild Canton of Graubünden to Mediterranean Tirano in Italy. The Bernina Express is a direct train between Chur to Tirano that crosses the Canton of Graubünden from north to south. The classic route is a four hour journey through rugged Alpine mountains, green valleys and an amazing number of spiral loops, tunnels and bridges. In summer there are more options: there is a Bernina Express from Davos and St. Moritz. All trains cross the Bernina Pass and ultimately end in Tirano. Not only is it the birthplace of fictional Heidi, but the wind battered plateaux in Engadine, the Rhine gorges steep ravines near Film and the Alpine beauty of the Swiss National Park all add allure to this remote region, and the Bernina Express winds through the untamed beauty of the Canton. The route that Bernina Express takes to completes its journey through the high Alpine paths on the Bernina Pass to the Mediterranean scenery in the Poschiavo Valley to Tirano can be divided into two sections (three, in the summer). The first section is from Chur to Pontresina and the second section is from Pontresina to Tirano. In the summer, the Bernina Express Bus travels down the third section- from Tirano to Lugano. Beginning from Chur, the train travels to Reichenau ( the Reichenau-Tamins is the gateway to the Rhine Gorge). From there the train travels south and arrives in Thusis.
