It’s a lie to say that Steven Spielberg’s Raiders of the Lost Ark is anything less than adventurous. Filled with underground traps and mystical hidden treasures, this movie can easily be classified as a modern day epic. A literary work is considered an epic if the protagonist is brave and wise, the setting is on a grand and vast scale, the actions in the work require superhuman abilities, supernatural entities involve themselves with the hero, and the work is written in an elevated style. Though only three of the qualities are strongly apparent in the movie, the qualities are solid and make Raiders of the Lost Ark clearly a modern epic in today’s world. A supernatural entity is a spiritual being that has some kind of holy or powerful effect on the way life goes, whether that be good or bad. In this case, there were many spiritual beings that interfered with Indiana Jones’ trek through life. Thankfully, they interfered with his life in a good way. The main instance being near the end of the movie when the Ark was finally opened. At this time, Dr. Jones and his accomplice, Marion, had been captured and tied to a pole with ropes. The Nazis had taken the Ark for themselves and prepared to open it. As they lugged the lid off, they were shocked to find the Ark filled with white sand. Furious, the leaders threw their handfuls of sand down. As they finished, all the lights suddenly blew out and busted; this was the first of many supernatural occurrences at that time. Within the next few minutes of that scene, the entire place was filled with an eerie blue light; that was the second presence of an entity, and it was God. At once, all the Nazis were struck down dead and disintegrated on the spot. Indiana Jones instructed Marion to keep her eyes shut to keep from looking at the supernatural being, and he did the same. Since they did, they were saved. The entity personally interfered with Dr. Jones’ life when the ropes that bound himself and Marion were broken. After all the events that occurred during this segment of the movie, it’s clear to see that these events weren’t the doings of an average person. The supernatural action in this movie makes it epic,
