As Though He Were A Puppet “Because to take away a man’s freedom of choice, even his freedom to make the wrong choice, is to manipulate him as though he were a puppet and not a person.” This quote by Madeleine L’Engle, a famous author, perfectly proves just how much freedom of choice matters to mankind. The definition of freedom of choice is, “The power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants.” (Oxford Dictionary) God has privileged humans with this right, yet sometimes this right is removed. Arranged marriages disregard this freedom and force two individuals into a relationship that often does not result in true love. One of most basic rights God has given to humans is the freedom of choice. He reveals this truth in 2 Peter 3:9, saying, “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” (NIV) Jesus does not force anyone to believe in him, but He offers them a option to trust Him. The Lord undoubtedly desires for everyone to follow Him, yet because of the decision He gives us, many choose not to seek Him. This privilege of choice also pertains to marriage, because God is the originator of all marriages. Without freedom of choice, everyone would become robotic and programmed taking away the creativity and uniqueness of life and resulting in a boring and dull existence. Forced marriages lead to many destructive consequences for both spouses. Some examples of these results include abuse, disrespect, and taking their partner for granted. In a pre-arranged marriage, neither person knows the other as well as they would if the marriage was the result of a personal decision. Marrying a stranger can quickly lead to verbal and physical abuse, which is why marriage must be the result of love. Colossians 3:18-19 gives instructions for an abuse-free Christian marriage, saying, “Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them.” (NIV) These two commands must both take place for a marriage to go smoothly. A submitting wife without a loving husband does not work well together, and neither does a loving husband without a submitting wife.
